written in Kiswahili nine decades ago (1930-1932) by Sheikh Al-Amin bin
Ali al-Mazrui. They appeared in Swahifa, the first newspaper in East Africa
with an Islamic perspective. In 1944 about twenty six essays were selected,
edited, and published as a book under the Kiswahili title, Uwongozi, by Sheikh
Muhammad Kasim Mazrui and Sheikh Rashid Kasim Mazrui – these essays
are published in their original form as an appendix to this volume. According
to Prof. Alamin Mazrui, “the essays covered topical issues of religion, politics,
society, culture, economics – but all from a “progressive” Islamic point of view
that reinforced Sheikh Al-Amin’s avant-garde convictions.” These essays –
including, for example, The Obligation of Muslims Today, Educating our
Young Women, Zeal, Economy, and Is it True that Religion is a Barrier to our
Progress? - are as relevant today as they were 90 years ago!
“As a scholar, Sheikh Al-Amin attempted to be a bridge between Islam and
modernity. He argued that while Christianity became the vanguard of progress
when it became more secular and less Christian, Islam was the vanguard of
progress when it was more Islamic and less secular. According to
Sheikh Al-Amin, progress among the Muslims required not the abandonment
of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment.”
Prof. Ali A. Mazrui (1933-2014)

Alhamdulillah.

First published in Arabic in 1933, it has undergone multiple reprints over the last nine decades of its existence. As the first English translation of Hidayat al-Atfal, Guidance for the Seeker of Knowledge is likely to be an important scholarly contribution to bringing East Africa to the global stage of Muslim agentive engagement in the construction of archives of Islamic knowledge and epistemologies.
A full overview of the book can be found on the back cover (Pg. 215). With 92 chapters methodically arranged, it can be used as a Reference Book by Muslims of ALL ages (see Table of Contents Pg. 3-6). For example, "Miracles of the Prophets" (Pg. 36). For a reminder of the meaning of every single utterance in Salah, simply go to “How to Perform Salah” (Pg. 113). About “Zakah on Silver and Gold” (Pg. 165). The questions at the end of each chapter makes the book ideal to quiz young members of the family about their religion. Some families can read and enjoy the book together, one chapter at a time. The book can be used at all levels of Islamic Schools (primary and secondary). Last but not least, the book can also benefit new Muslims as well as non-Muslims who may be interested to learn about Islam.
