Aim: To determine the impact of community-based health education (CbHED) in the implementation of the PHC program in bauchi state, Nigeria. Methodology: The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design. 20 development areas were studied and each of these wards had one PHC centre. The study consisted of two groups; a provider survey (health workers) and a household survey (community members). 317 questionnaires were administered, but only 312 were returned. A 25-item questionnaire had three sections: demographics, level of participation and acceptance. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 21.0. A chi-squared test was used to determine the relationship between the levels of education and acceptance of community-based health education in primary health care at p < 0.05. Result: 136 (43.6%) were men, while 176 (56.4%) were women. The age distribution indicates that the majority of the study respondents were within the age range of 25-41, n = 181 (58.0%). There was no relationship between the age of the study participants and their level of participation in CbHED in PHC (p < 0.005). There was no relationship between the source of information and participation in PHC (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a need to also extend the CbHED approach to other health-related services which would target community-level implementation.

Research paper thumbnail of Expanded Ethical Principles for Research Partnership and Transdisciplinary Natural Resource Management Science

Environmental Management, 2021

Natural resource researchers have long recognized the value of working closely with the managers ... more Natural resource researchers have long recognized the value of working closely with the managers and communities who depend on, steward, and impact ecosystems. These partnerships take various forms, including co-production and transdisciplinary research approaches, which integrate multiple knowledges in the design and implementation of research objectives, questions, methods, and desired outputs or outcomes. These collaborations raise important methodological and ethical challenges, because partnering with non-scientists can have real-world risks for people and ecosystems. The social sciences and biomedical research studies offer a suite of conceptual tools that enhance the quality, ethical outcomes, and effectiveness of research partnerships. For example, the ethical guidelines and regulations for human subjects research, following the Belmont Principles, help prevent harm and promote respectful treatment of research participants. However, science-management partnerships require an expanded set of ethical concepts to better capture the challenges of working with individuals, communities, organizations, and their associated ecosystems, as partners, rather than research subjects. We draw from our experiences in collaborative teams, and build upon the existing work of natural resources, environmental health, conservation and ecology, social science, and humanities scholars, to develop an expanded framework for ethical research partnership. This includes four principles: (1) appropriate representation, (2) self-determination, (3) reciprocity, and (4) deference, and two cross-cutting themes: (1) applications to humans and non-human actors, and (2) acquiring appropriate research skills. This framework is meant to stimulate important conversations about expanding ethics training and skills for researchers in all career-stages to improve partnerships and transdisciplinary natural resources research.

The International Indigenous Data Sovereignty Interest Group (within the Research Data Alliance) is a network of nation-state based Indigenous data sovereignty networks and individuals that developed the 'CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance' (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) in consultation with Indigenous Peoples, scholars, non-profit organizations, and governments. The CARE Principles are people-and purpose-oriented, reflecting the crucial role of data in advancing innovation, governance, and self-determination among Indigenous Peoples. The Principles complement the existing data-centric approach represented in the 'FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship' (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). The CARE Principles build upon earlier work by the Te Mana Raraunga Maori Data Sovereignty Network, US Indigenous Data Sovereignty Network, Maiam nayri Wingara Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Data Sovereignty Collective, and numerous Indigenous Peoples, nations, and communities. The goal is that stewards and other users of Indigenous data will 'Be FAIR and CARE.' In this first formal publication of the CARE Principles, we articulate their rationale, describe their relation to the FAIR Principles, and present examples of their application.

This report examines issues pertaining to health financing in Nigerian rural areas in order to encourage people in SSA to implement "Community-Based Health Insurance Scheme in the rural regions." "It's been significant because it offers a chance for the citizenry to be out of poverty as a result of high money paid whenever they are assessing health care through out-of-pocket payment at the point of service delivery. "This schema is a raw area of health financing in the developing countries supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank (WB) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) among others." Few of the SSA countries like Ghana, Mali, and Burkina Faso are doing well using the scheme to finance health care delivery in the rural regions. "In Nigeria, this concept of communitybased health insurance plan is a new development. Thus, an attempt should be attained to create consciousness about this commendable project." The management of the CBHIS should focus on the rural dwellers on one hand, and government should provide enabling laws on the other.

Research paper thumbnail of Potential Role of Serum Magnesium Measurement as a Biomarker of Acute Falciparum Malaria Infection in Adult Patients

Biological Trace Element Research, 2006

Serum magnesium concentration was measured in 80 adult patients (age range: 18-40 yr) presenting ... more Serum magnesium concentration was measured in 80 adult patients (age range: 18-40 yr) presenting with acute, uncomplicated falciparum malaria infection and a control group of 20 age-matched, healthy individuals. The mean serum magnesium concentration in the patients was 1950.0 ± 10.0 µg/dL. The control serum magnesium was 640.0 ± 40.0 µg/dL. This represents an over threefold increase in serum magnesium levels above normal value, p < 0.01. The key pathogenic event in acute falciparum malaria infection is the hemolysis of both infected and uninfected red blood cells. Therefore, the increased serum magnesium concentration might occur because of the hemolysis arising from erythrocytic merogony because red blood cells contain high amounts of magnesium. In conclusion, the increased serum magnesium has potential application as a biomarker of acute falciparum malaria infection in adults.

The mean serum copper concentration was 109.0 ± 40.0 µg/dL in healthy individuals. Both male and female patients were found to have a significantly decreased serum copper concentration (p < 0.05). In the male patients, the mean serum copper concentration decreased by 33.95%, whereas it dropped by 38.53% in their female counterparts. A compromised enzymatic antioxidant defense capability, particularly superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, has been reported in patients with falciparum malaria infection. Because SOD activity is dependent on copper, the ineffective SOD activity can be related to the decrease in the concentration of copper during the infection. Low serum copper can also contribute to the ineffective immune response of the host to the antigenic challenge of the falciparum parasite because copper is also important for normal immune function.

Research paper thumbnail of The use of lysosomal enzymuria in the early detection and monitoring of the progression of diabetic nephropathy

Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry, 2006

Recent acquisitions on the early detection and monitoring of the progression of diabetic complica... more Recent acquisitions on the early detection and monitoring of the progression of diabetic complications (nephropathy) using the techniques of enzymology (lysosomal enzymes) are reviewed. It appears that the kidney is the principal source of urinary lysosomal enzymes. Urinary samples for lysosomal enzyme determination can be either 24-hour or spot-collection. The use of synthetic substrates (4-methylumbelliferyl substrates) provides an easy, inexpensive, sensitive and highly reproducible method of lysosomal enzyme assay. It is recommended that more than one enzyme be assayed in the process. The use of fractional enzyme excretion (FEE) ratios is further recommended. The urinary lysosomal glycosidases investigated and found to be of particular diagnostic value in the early detection of diabetic nephropathy include N-acetyl-E-Dglucosaminidase (E-hexosaminidase, NAG), E-glucuronidase and E-galactosidase, with NAG being the most useful indicator. Urinary NAG can be used in monitoring the progression of diabetic nephropathy. The fluorimetric assay of lysosomal glycosidases is particularly recommended in developing countries since it is simple, sensitive and inexpensive.

Some students opined their challenges of remaining in the environment. Others found learning in the MALL environment helpful and improved their reading and writing. Taking an action research approach allowed the two teacher-researchers to unearth the paradigmatic purpose behind supporting students in the MALL environment. The current research falls within the scope of surfacing and linking MALL action with MALL practice, contributing to the active bridging of the pa...
