Samples were collected from different fish landing centers of Sadar Upazila of Gazipur district. GSI values of N. nandus ranged from 4.26 ± 0.45 to 10.28 ± 0.39 while the maximum and the minimum GSI values were observed in July and in October, respectively. However, GaSI values showed an inverse relationship between them. The fecundity of this fish varied from 11176 ±593 to 18030 ± 1704 with the mean fecundity value of 13534.87 ± 87.53. Interestingly the highest fecundity was 18030 ± 1704 in July and the lowest fecundity was 11176 ± 593 in March, implying that the fecundity increased with the increment of time. Histological observation of ovary confirmed the presence of undeveloped oocyte (UO) to mature (M) stages of oocytes in fishes from March to November. The mature stages of oocytes including yolk vesicle’s (YV), yo...

The cages were uniform in size of 1.80 m 3 and were stocked with gulsha fry at the rate of (i) 200 fry/ m 3 (T1), ii) 300 fry/ m 3 (T2), and (iii) 400 fry/ m 3 (T3). No significant differences were observed among the treatments in weight gain {11.46±0.16g (T1); 11.40±0.14g (T2); 11.48±0.04g (T3)}, SGR {2.77±0.06 (T1); 2.70±0.10 (T2); 2.71±0.09 (T3) day-1}, and survival rates {87.3±6.6 (T1); 85.7±4.7 (T2); 84.9±5.4 (T3) %}. A significantly higher (p<0.05) gross production of 4.29±0.32 kg/ m 3 in 90 days was obtained in T3 (400 fry/ m 3) treatment compared to T2 and T1. The coefficient of determination values (r 2) of length-weight relationship (LWR) was 0.95, 0.94, and 0.94 in T1, T2, and T3 treatments, respectively indicating a good linear regression between length and weight. The results demonstrate that the cage culture of gulsha in pond condition is possible where 400 fry/ m 3 stocking density in circular shaped cages may be suitable for higher growth, survival and production.

This study revealed that total plate count (TPC) in retail markets and control samples ranged from 5.75±0.35×10 to 8.74±0.39×10 cfu/g and 2.23±0.15×10 to 3.13±0.20×10 cfu/g, respectively. In samples of retail markets total fungal count (TFC) ranged from 5.67±0.30×10 to 7.43±0.25×10 cfu/g, TFC in control samples ranged from 1.15±0.10×10 to 2.47±0.21×10 cfu/g. It also found that total coliform count (TCC) in retail market and control samples ranged from 73.27±16.74 to 94.03±20.14 MPN/g and 20.11±2.39 to 31.45±5.74 MPN/g, respectively. Both samples for all counts, the highest TPC was found in Narsingdi sample and the lowest was in Chandpur sample. A total of 120 pairs of broodfish was used and fed with diets incorporating different levels of probiotic viz. 0 (served as a control), 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0g / kg diet under 4 treatments, i.e. PRO0, PRO1, PRO2 and PRO3 having 3 replications of each. After feeding trials, the brood fish were induced to breed with equal doses of ovaprim i.e. 0.5 and 1.2ml/kg body weight for male and female, respectively and subsequently larvae were produced. The experimental fish were observed for the success in reproductive performance like Gonado Somatic Index (GSI), fecundity, percentage of fertilization, percentage of hatching, percentage of deformed and formed larvae. GSI (10.24±0.94), fertilization rate (76.07±1.67) and percentage of hatching (78.65±4.17) found increased in PRO2 treatment. Likewise, in case of growth rate PRO2 also ...

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of extenders and storage periods on motility and fertilization rate of Silver Barb , Barbonymus gonionotus ( Bleeker , 1850 ) semen

The effects of short-term storage on the motility and fertilization rate of Barbonymus gonionotus... more The effects of short-term storage on the motility and fertilization rate of Barbonymus gonionotus semen were evaluated at different storage period. The best quality semen in terms of spermatological parameters were diluted with 5 different extenders viz. skim milk with fish ringer, glucose based extender, Alsever's solution, egg yolk citrate and urea egg yolk at a ratio of 1:4, 1:6 and 1:9. Glucose based extender and skim milk with fish ringer solution at 1:4 and Alsever's solution at 1:9 dilution ratios showed significantly the best equilibrium sperm motility (>80%). Similarly, the highest motility was obtained from semen stored for 30h with glucose based extender in portable ice box with ice at ~2°C. In fertilization trials, Alsever's solution, glucose based extender and skim milk with fish ringer solution presented 5.85%, 33.66% and 9.03% fertilization rate respectively after 24h of storage period compared to fresh sperm. Therefore, it can be concluded that glucose based extender is the best extender than the other extenders used in this study for the short term preservation of silver barb semen.
