The construction industry in Nigeria is highly fragmented and has been portrayed as being very adversarial. To this effect, numerous contractors and industry professionals are lamenting on the nature of Nigerian contractual dispensation, which is not designed to stimulate good management and foresighted collaboration between stakeholders. The traditional JCT contract currently employed in the Nigerian construction industry does not provide effective control of change, cost impacts of change, early warning of risks, risk apportionment, and quick dispute resolution mechanisms. Therefore, the consequent result is time and cost overruns, customer dissatisfaction, lengthy disputes and disruption of relationships among contracting parties. This situation informed the researcher’s decision to check the viability for a contractual shift from non-collaborative to a collaborative Standard Form of Contract. In response to increase adversarialism in the UK construction sector, the Government recommended the use of collaborative contracts such as NEC3, JCT construction excellence and PPC2000. Of these Standard forms of contract, the NEC3 suit of contract was better designed to promote collaboration among contracting parties and consequently, provided the required value for money. Sequel to this report, the researchers proposed the NEC3 suit of contract for Nigerian projects. This led to an exploratory study to determine its suitability, acceptability and feasibility in the Nigerian Built Environment. Thus, a quantitative approach was used to gather information on the awareness of NEC3 as a Form of contract and the inherent barriers that may hamper its adoption on Nigerian construction projects. These information’s were obtained using a questionnaire tool and analysed using descriptive statistical tools in particular frequency distribution. The outcome of the analysis revealed a low level of awareness to NEC3 and major barriers to the adoption of NEC3 on Nigerian projects. In conclusion, the study gave necessary recommendations on the possibility for the implementation of NEC3 contracts.
Keywords: collaboration, contract administration, dispute resolution, joint contracts tribunal (JCT), new engineering contract (NEC3), Nigeria, standard forms of contract.

It is noted that half of the world’s population is now living in cities. The world urban population is expected to increase by 84% by 2050, from 3.4 billion in 2009 to 6.3 billion and will happen in developing countries. Also projected in the next 20 years, over 95% of this population growth will occur in urban areas. Kano is among the fast urbanizing cities in the West African sub region. This paper focuses on the implication of building regulation contravention in Kano metropolis and its impact on the sustainability in mixed land-use areas. It identifies and documents the key drivers of contravention. The findings are expected to create the platform for developing a conceptual framework that might improve compliance to sustainable development regulation regime in Kano metropolis. The significance of the findings is expected to form the foundation towards develop...

It is premise that, lack of adequate client awareness on the potential benefits realization and high costs associated with design and construction are seen to be key barriers in delivering green and sustainable buildings in the construction industry. Viewed from the concept of community of practice (CoP), it is the corporate social responsibility of the construction industry stakeholders to improve the current level of client`s awareness on green buildings and benefits realization. It is argued that a major setback to green building programs adoption is the lack of public awareness. This paper seeks to assess the level of client`s awareness on green building designs and the potential long term benefits to be achieved by delivering green and sustainable buildings. The study adopts an inductive approach and qualitative method. The data for analysis was collated through interview with both informed and ill-informed in the Nigerian construction industry and analyzed using thematic analysis. In this paper, design and developing green buildings is seen to have a great potential to optimize client's/owners benefits realization, through energy efficiency; organizational level of productivity and minimize building lifecycle operation costs in Nigerian commercial buildings. This can only be achieved if the client is well informed of the benefits to be realized in short term and in the long term

Thus, the effectiveness and functionality of an architectural product depends their cordial relationship. This applies to all buildings especially to a hospital ward setting designed to accommodate various complex and diverse functions. Health care facilities design, especially an inpatient setting, is governed by many regulations and technical requirements. It is also affected by many less defined needs, particularly, response to culture and the need to provide for patient families’ presence and participation. The spatial configuration of the hospital ward setting in developing countries has no consideration for the patient’s families despite the significant role they play in promoting recovery. Attempts to integrate facilities for patients’ families have always been challenging, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, where accommodation for inpatients is predominantly i...
