The paper attempts to explore the aspect system in Mugali Rai, spoken in Dhankuta district of Nep... more The paper attempts to explore the aspect system in Mugali Rai, spoken in Dhankuta district of Nepal by a very few people firstly and compares and contrasts Mugali Rai aspect system with that of English aspect system secondly. There are only two aspects in Mugali Rai, namely perfect and progressive. Perfect aspect can be categorised into past perfect and present perfect in terms of time dimensions. Similarly, progressive aspect is also categorised into past progressive and present progressive from time dimensions. All types of aspects in Mugali Rai are morphologicall marked. On the contrary, aspect system in English is not only morphologicall marked. There are several complex construction using have+past participle, be+present participle and have+been+present participle for perfect, progressive and perfect progressive respectively. This paper reports on a sociolinguistic study of the Belhare speech community which is a part of ... more This paper reports on a sociolinguistic study of the Belhare speech community which is a part of the Belhare language documentation project funded by the Language Commission of the government of Nepal in 2018. This article presents sociolinguistic information on Belhare, a lesser known speech community originally settled in Dhankuta, east Nepal. The main contribution of this paper is to examine domains of language use, language use among generations, attitude towards Belhare, Nepali and English, Belhare speakers as multilingual speakers, languages resources and language proficiency among children.

ABSTRACTAnalyzing the development of the noun-to-verb ratio in a longitudinal corpus of four Chin... more ABSTRACTAnalyzing the development of the noun-to-verb ratio in a longitudinal corpus of four Chintang (Sino-Tibetan) children, we find that up to about age four, children have a significantly higher ratio than adults. Previous cross-linguistic research rules out an explanation of this in terms of a universal noun bias; instead, a likely cause is that Chintang verb morphology is polysynthetic and difficult to learn. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the development of Chintang children's noun-to-verb ratio correlates significantly with the extent to which they show a similar flexibility with verbal morphology to that of the surrounding adults, as measured by morphological paradigm entropy. While this development levels off around age three, children continue to have a higher overall noun-to-verb ratio than adults.
