The study assessed the incidence and risk factor associated with the occurrence of carbapenem-res... more The study assessed the incidence and risk factor associated with the occurrence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) among hospitalized patients at three tertiary hospitals in Southwest, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study was performed over a six-month surveillance period in the locations with a total of 300 blood and urine samples. A structured close-ended questionnaire was also administered to all subjects for review of demographics and potential risk factors. Fifty-nine isolates belonging to genera Escherichia (52.5%), Enterobacter (23.8%), Klebsiella (10.2%) and Proteus (13.6%) were isolated. All the isolates were multi-drug resistant with a notable resistance (100%) to cephalosporins and significant sensitivity to nitrofurantoin. A total of 23 isolates including Escherichia coli (n = 8), Enterobacter aerogenes (n = 9), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 1) and Proteus mirabilis (n = 5) exhibited resistance to one or both of imipenem and meropenem. The present study evaluated the antibacterial effects of the methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous ex... more The present study evaluated the antibacterial effects of the methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Senna alata leaves. The extracts were tested using agar well diffusion method against selected clinical isolates: Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Antibiogram profile of the isolates deduced by disc diffusion method confirmed that the methanolic extract inhibited the growth of all tested organisms except for Klebsiella pneumoniae, which also showed no sensitivity to the ethanolic extract. There was no inhibition observed for the aqueous extract against all the tested organisms, indicating that the methanolic extract of the plant was more potent than the aqueous extract. Inhibitory activities were observed for gentamicin, ofloxacin and erythromycin against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This study focused on isolating actinomycetes from soil of reserved areas and profiling them for antibacterial potentials.METHODS: The isolates (IS-2, IS-4, IS-6, IS-10, IS-14) were assessed for antagonistic activity against ten multi-drug resistant bacterial strains (Gram positive and negative) by cross streak and well diffusion methods.RESULTS: During the primary screening, four of the isolates showed good antagonistic activity against the test strains. Notably, all the bacterial strains except Pseudomonas aeruginosa responded sensitively to at least one of the actinomycetes screened. The crude extracts of the secondary metabolites of the four actinomycetes (IS-2, IS-4, IS-6, IS-10) with considerably significant antagonistic activities inhibited the growth of all the bacterial strains efficiently.
