It is traditionally for the treatment of HIV/AIDs related diseases, Breast cancer, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Appendicitis, Epilepsy and convulsion, Malaria e.t.c. A review of relevant literature on biology, folkloric uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology were done. The electronic databases searched included Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley and Springer. Sixteen bioactive compounds have been isolated from the plants namely; 3-O-benzoylhosloppone, 3-O-cinnamoylhosloppone, 3-O-benzoylhinokiol, 3-O-benzoylhosloquine, Euscaphic acid, 5,7-dimethoxy6-methylflavone, Hoslunddiol, Oppositin, 5-O-methylhoslundin, Tectochrysin, Hoslundin, Hoslunfuranine, 5-O-methylhoslunfuranine, Hosloppin, Hoslundal and Ursolic acid. The plant as its phytochemicals has shown various pharmacological effects such as antimalarial, antidiabetes, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and immunomodulatory effects. This review presented scientific findings on the therapeutic potential of Hoslundia opposita against several infectious and non-infectious diseases. There is a need for further investigation of the mechanism underlying the therapeutic potential of this plant against various diseases. There is also a need for clinical trials which will validate its efficacy and safety.

This is of utmost importance in resource limited countries. This study determined the knowledge and perception about COVID-19; adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures; as well as predictors of self-perceived risk of contracting COVID-19 among Nigerian adults.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among Nigerian adults ≥ 18 years using an online survey. Participants were recruited using the authors’ social networks. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 5% level of statistical significance.Results: Generally, a high proportion of respondents had correct knowledge about COVID-19. An ethnobotanical survey of the plants used for the traditional management of malaria by the resi... more An ethnobotanical survey of the plants used for the traditional management of malaria by the residents of Ondo State, Nigeria was carried out. Data was collected by interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. A total of 162 indigenous people were interviewed [male, 110 (68%); female, 52(32%)]. A total of 97 plant species belonging to 52 different families were identified. Detailed information about their vernacular names, modes of preparation and previous investigations of their antiplasmodial/antimalarial effects was also compiled. Of the plants identified, the family Euphorbiaceae is predominant while Mangifera indica, Anacardium occidentale and Cymbopogon citratus are the most cited species. Only a few (37%) of the plants identified have been subjected to scientific investigations, most of which are only preliminary. Of the tested plants, some have shown in vivo activities comparable with that of orthodox antimalarial drugs. There is, therefore, a need to scientifically investigate the antimalarial potential of these plants as they serve as potential source of lead compounds for malaria therapy.

It has gained wide application in the treatment and management of various diseases. The leaves are useful components for herbal medicine constitution. The plant's activities is a result of diverse bioactive compounds isolated from the different parts of the plant. These metabolites have specifically been efficacious against parasites especially worms. The mechanisms of activities include paralysis of worm, interference with energy generation and impairment with nutrient absorption, motility, and reproduction. The lack of considerable toxicity associated with the plant makes it a choice for further drug discovery. Effort should be made towards standardizing the extract(s) of V. amygdalina for use in alternative medicine for treatment of helminth-related diseases.

The genotoxic and anti-genotoxic effects of the aqueous extract of S. acuta on onion cells (Allium cepa L.) was evaluated using the Allium cepa L. assay. Onion bulbs were exposed to 0.25 – 2.5 mg.mL-1 concentrations of the plant extract for analyses of induction of cytogenetic damage. There was observeda concentration-dependent decrease in mitotic index of the A. cepa roots cells compared to the negative control. This review discusses the epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis and colorectal cancer and attempts to unravel the possible link between the two diseases using epidemiological, pathological, molecular, and immunological evidence. The review stressed the need to undertake more studies in this relatively neglected field.

Objective: To correlate the levels of bladder tumour antigen (BTA) with aflatoxin M1 (AFM) in a h... more Objective: To correlate the levels of bladder tumour antigen (BTA) with aflatoxin M1 (AFM) in a human population in Nigeria. Subjects and methods: A pilot, observational study was conducted with 22 human subjects randomly recruited from a Nigerian rural community. Serum and first morning urine of participants were analysed for human BTA and AFM1, respectively, using quantitative ELISA assays. Results: All the subjects were positive to AFM1 (mean = 0.235 ± 0.072 ng/mL) while 19 were positive to BTA (mean = 2.340 ± 1.741 ng/mL). A negative relationship occurred between human BTA and AFM level (r = −0.239; P = 0.285). Human BTA (2.86 ± 2.43 ng/mL; P = 0.306) and AFM1 (0.258 ± 0.065 ng/mL; P = 0.643) were higher in subjects 1-20 years. The two biomarkers were not also associated with sexes of the participants (P > 0.05), although they were higher in the female subjects.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) are widely used and may impact the environment. Thus, ... more Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) are widely used and may impact the environment. Thus, this study used a high concentration of TiO 2 NP (1000 mg/L) to verify the defense mechanisms triggered by a plant system-an indicator of toxicity. Furthermore, this study aimed at completely characterizing TiO 2 NP suspensions to elucidate their toxic behavior. TiO 2 NPs were taken up by meristematic cells of Allium cepa, leading to slight inhibition of seed germination and root growth. However, severe cellular and DNA damages were observed in a concentration-dependent manner (10, 100, and 1000 mg/L). For this reason, we used the highest tested concentration (1000 mg/L) to verify if the plant cells developed defense mechanisms against the TiO 2 NPs and evaluated other evidences of TiO 2 NP genotoxicity. Nucleolar alterations and plant defense responses (i.e., increased lytic vacuoles, oil bodies and NP phase change) were observed in meristematic cells exposed to TiO 2 NP at 1000 mg/L. In summary, TiO 2 NPs can damage the genetic material of plants; however, plants displayed defense mechanisms against the deleterious effects of these NPs. In addition, A. cepa was found to be a suitable test system to evaluate the cyto-and genotoxicity of NPs.

Spondias mombin (Linn), Nymphaea lotus (Linn) and Luffa cylindrica (Linn) (syn Luffa aegyptiaca M... more Spondias mombin (Linn), Nymphaea lotus (Linn) and Luffa cylindrica (Linn) (syn Luffa aegyptiaca Mill) are plants traditionally used as food ingredients and in the management of diseases, including cancer, in Nigeria. Despite the therapeutic potentials attributed to these plants, reports on their genotoxicity are scanty. In this study, the genotoxicity of the aqueous and hydro-methanol extract of these plants was evaluated using mouse bone marrow micronucleus and sperm morphology assays. Antigenotoxicity was assessed by the bone marrow micronucleus test. The highest attainable dose of 5 000 mg/kg according to OECD guidelines was first used to assess acute toxicity of the aqueous and hydro-methanol extracts in Swiss albino mice. For each extract, there were five groups of mice (n=4/group) treated with different concentrations of the extract as against the negative and positive control group for the genotoxicity study. In the antigenotoxicity study, five groups of mice were exposed to five different concentrations of the extracts along with 60 mg/kg of methyl methane sulfonate (MMS), which was used to induce genotoxicity. The mice were administered 0.2 mL of extract per day for 10 days in the genotoxicity and antigenotoxicity groups. Administration of each of the extracts at the concentration of 5 000 mg/kg did not induce acute toxicity in mice. At the concentrations tested, all the extracts, except aqueous S. mombin, increased micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes. The aqueous and hydro-methanol extracts of N. lotus increased the frequency of aberrant sperm cells. All the extracts were also able to ameliorate MMS induced genotoxicity in bone marrow cells of the exposed mice. The results showed the potential of the extracts to induce somatic and germ cell mutation in male mice. The extracts also ameliorated the genotoxic effect of MMS.

However, their therapeutic applications are hampered by several factors, which necessitate their development into nanosize ranges for improved delivery and activities. Their incorporation into a single nanosynthesized form may suggest desirable efficacy on parasites. The aim of the study was to assess the ovicidal activity of the curcumin-nisin polylactic acid (PLA) entrapped nanoparticle on the Fasciola eggs and its reproductive toxicity. The nanoparticle was formulated by double emulsion method. The eggs of the adult Fasciola spp. were exposed to different concentrations (0.3125-5 mg/mL) of the nanoparticle to monitor hatchability. It has gained wide application in the treatment and management of various diseases. The leaves are useful components for herbal medicine constitution. The plant's activities is a result of diverse bioactive compounds isolated from the different parts of the plant. These metabolites have specifically been efficacious against parasites especially worms. The mechanisms of activities include paralysis of worm, interference with energy generation and impairment with nutrient absorption, motility, and reproduction. The lack of considerable toxicity associated with the plant makes it a choice for further drug discovery. Effort should be made towards standardizing the extract(s) of V. amygdalina for use in alternative medicine for treatment of helminth-related diseases.

The genotoxic and anti-genotoxic effects of the aqueous extract of S. acuta on onion cells (Allium cepa L.) was evaluated using the Allium cepa L. assay. Objective: To correlate the levels of bladder tumour antigen (BTA) with aflatoxin M1 (AFM) in a h... more Objective: To correlate the levels of bladder tumour antigen (BTA) with aflatoxin M1 (AFM) in a human population in Nigeria. Subjects and methods: A pilot, observational study was conducted with 22 human subjects randomly recruited from a Nigerian rural community. Serum and first morning urine of participants were analysed for human BTA and AFM1, respectively, using quantitative ELISA assays. Results: All the subjects were positive to AFM1 (mean = 0.235 ± 0.072 ng/mL) while 19 were positive to BTA (mean = 2.340 ± 1.741 ng/mL). A negative relationship occurred between human BTA and AFM level (r = −0.239; P = 0.285). Human BTA (2.86 ± 2.43 ng/mL; P = 0.306) and AFM1 (0.258 ± 0.065 ng/mL; P = 0.643) were higher in subjects 1-20 years. The two biomarkers were not also associated with sexes of the participants (P > 0.05), although they were higher in the female subjects.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) are widely used and may impact the environment. Thus, ... more Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) are widely used and may impact the environment. Thus, this study used a high concentration of TiO 2 NP (1000 mg/L) to verify the defense mechanisms triggered by a plant system-an indicator of toxicity. Furthermore, this study aimed at completely characterizing TiO 2 NP suspensions to elucidate their toxic behavior. TiO 2 NPs were taken up by meristematic cells of Allium cepa, leading to slight inhibition of seed germination and root growth. However, severe cellular and DNA damages were observed in a concentration-dependent manner (10, 100, and 1000 mg/L). For this reason, we used the highest tested concentration (1000 mg/L) to verify if the plant cells developed defense mechanisms against the TiO 2 NPs and evaluated other evidences of TiO 2 NP genotoxicity. Nucleolar alterations and plant defense responses (i.e., increased lytic vacuoles, oil bodies and NP phase change) were observed in meristematic cells exposed to TiO 2 NP at 1000 mg/L. In summary, TiO 2 NPs can damage the genetic material of plants; however, plants displayed defense mechanisms against the deleterious effects of these NPs. In addition, A. cepa was found to be a suitable test system to evaluate the cyto-and genotoxicity of NPs.

Spondias mombin (Linn), Nymphaea lotus (Linn) and Luffa cylindrica (Linn) (syn Luffa aegyptiaca M... more Spondias mombin (Linn), Nymphaea lotus (Linn) and Luffa cylindrica (Linn) (syn Luffa aegyptiaca Mill) are plants traditionally used as food ingredients and in the management of diseases, including cancer, in Nigeria. Despite the therapeutic potentials attributed to these plants, reports on their genotoxicity are scanty. In this study, the genotoxicity of the aqueous and hydro-methanol extract of these plants was evaluated using mouse bone marrow micronucleus and sperm morphology assays. Antigenotoxicity was assessed by the bone marrow micronucleus test. The highest attainable dose of 5 000 mg/kg according to OECD guidelines was first used to assess acute toxicity of the aqueous and hydro-methanol extracts in Swiss albino mice. For each extract, there were five groups of mice (n=4/group) treated with different concentrations of the extract as against the negative and positive control group for the genotoxicity study. In the antigenotoxicity study, five groups of mice were exposed to five different concentrations of the extracts along with 60 mg/kg of methyl methane sulfonate (MMS), which was used to induce genotoxicity. The mice were administered 0.2 mL of extract per day for 10 days in the genotoxicity and antigenotoxicity groups. Administration of each of the extracts at the concentration of 5 000 mg/kg did not induce acute toxicity in mice. At the concentrations tested, all the extracts, except aqueous S. mombin, increased micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes. The aqueous and hydro-methanol extracts of N. lotus increased the frequency of aberrant sperm cells. All the extracts were also able to ameliorate MMS induced genotoxicity in bone marrow cells of the exposed mice. The results showed the potential of the extracts to induce somatic and germ cell mutation in male mice. The extracts also ameliorated the genotoxic effect of MMS.
