Design/methodology/approach The authors adopted a quantitative approach and designed their survey from validated scales in prior studies. Data were obtained from two different sources, including 149 employees and 31 immediate supervisors. Hierarchical linear modeling techniques were applied to test the hypotheses. Findings The results showed that anticipated regret was significantly related to safety compliance and safety participation; egoistic ethical climate was negatively correlated with safety compliance and safety participation, while benevolent ethical climate was only positively correlated with safety participation. For cross-level moderating effects, both benevolent and principle ethical clim...

To examine the research hypotheses, structural equation modeling techniques were employed to perform a mediation analysis and conditional process analysis.FindingsThe results of this research showed that career ambition mediates the relationship between psychological entitlement and job involvement, where psychological entitlement is positively related to career ambition, and career ambition is positively related to job involvement. Nonetheless, the authors' data did not support the proposed moderation effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between career ambition and job involvement.Originality/valueThis work i...

The implications are two fold:. 1. Encouraging teachers to implement Futures Imagination into their curriculum can enrich their teaching resources. 2. Preliminary findings support the notion that Futures Imagination in Education and students' learning interests are significantly related. With the best use of the skills and tools of teaching futures imagination would, in the end, lead to a better wellbeing and better future for our next generation.

Research paper thumbnail of Cultural influences in acquiescent response: A study of trainer evaluation biases

We posit that conflict-handling style affects ones tendency to acquiesce in trainer evaluations, and this relationship is regulated by cultural influence. Surveys were sent to employees with training experience in Taiwan and North America, 395 valid responses were collected. Results showed that the two individual conflict-handling styles: nonconfrontation style and dominating style, are positively related to acquiescent tendency; and their relationship is found moderated by the influence of Confucian work dynamism, thus confirming the influence of cultural norms. Our findings contribute to HRD practitioners by highlighting the different conflict-handling style and culture influence will result in different level of acquiescent propensity, trainer evaluations results should be interpreted more carefully and cautiously. 1 | INTRODUCTION Training and development is a key human resource practice, generally seen as an essential investment to sustain competitive advantages for

Research paper thumbnail of When perceived welfare practices leads to organizational citizenship behavior

Asia Pacific Management Review, 2016

Due to institutional requirements, organizations in Taiwan adopt Employee Welfare Committee (EWC)... more Due to institutional requirements, organizations in Taiwan adopt Employee Welfare Committee (EWC) to implement employee welfare planning and execution in the organization. However, little is known about how EWC practices influence employees' perceptions and behaviors in the organization in Taiwan. The current study aims to explore whether organizations can benefit from providing EWC practices, and among the first to provide a snapshot of EWC implementation and usage in Taiwanese organizations. Grounded in signaling theory and social exchange theory, we posit that EWC practices can serve as signals for showing concern and support for employees from the organization, if these practices were perceived by the employee, they may exhibit extra-role behavior in return. Questionnaire results from 216 employees in 15 organizations showed that there is a positive relationship between perceived EWC practices and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Results also suggest that there is a significant mediating effect for perceived organizational support (POS) between perceived EWC practices and OCB. EWC practices utilize as support from the organization, and employees reciprocate in beneficial ways in return to the organization. Implications and limitations of the current study are then discussed.

The purpose of this study aimed at how employees in Taiwan sense their work as meaningful by introducing prosocial motivation along with two organizational-related factors – task significance and external prestige. Design/methodology/approach In total, 451 questionnaires were used to analyze the relationships among task significance, external prestige, prosocial motivation and work meaningfulness. Findings The results confirm the research hypotheses. This study advanced our understanding of how work meaningfulness arises through an integration of an individual’s psychological state with work contexts. The implications for managerial practices and future research are discussed. Originality/value This research represented an initial empirical test for measuring these constructs in Taiwanese society. While all the measurements have good reliabilities, it is only a good start. The e...

We performed retrospective studies of such cases in 78 patients with complete records. The majority of victims were unmarried (75.7%), young (<25 years, 70.5%), and female (69.3%), dressed mostly in short pants or mini skirts (75.7%). The burn accident occurred mostly in late spring and early summer (52.7%), during rush hours (57.7%), and during parking the motorcycles (65.4%). The burn wounds located mostly on the lateral aspect (46.2%) of the lower leg, usually took 3-4 weeks for complete healing. Continuous monitoring of the exhaust pipe and its outside cover on moving motorcycles showed that the temperature reached 170-250 and 40-60 • C, respectively. For the prevention of these injuries, our suggestions include well-designed external shield with adequate separation from the exhaust pipe, motorcycle parking lots of adequate width (>120 cm), the wearing of trousers by motorcyclists, decrease of the density of motorcycle traffic, and development of the electric assisted cycle in place of the fuel-driven motorcycle.
