Since many European countries, including Belgium, have been confronted with high migratory pressure, it is important to develop prevention strategies and care paths for MARs affected by SV. Knowing possible risk factors for and consequences of SV in MAR in Europe and their help-seeking behavior is crucial to this. Methods: A critical interpretive synthesis of 37 peer-reviewed articles and 22 grey literature documents gave an overview of the existing evidence based on the socio-ecological model. Results: Risk factors and consequences of SV in MAR are comparable to those in the general population, but engender a different impact. We identified barriers for seeking and finding appropriate help after SV in MAR.Conclusions: The vulnerability for and impact of SV on MAR may be far greater than in the general population due to the speci...

Othering-based stress (OBS) may mediate the relationship between minority identification and SV. This study aims to assess the prevalence of SV in different MGs to explore the relationship between minority identification and SV, to investigate whether belonging to multiple MGs moderates this relationship, and to explore OBS SV moderation for different MGs. Method: Through an online survey administered to a nationally representative sample in Belgium, data was collected from 4632 persons, of whom 21.01% self-identified as belonging to a MG (SI-Minority). SV prevalence was measured using behaviorally specific questions based on the WHO definition of SV. SI-Minority participants received an additional scale on OBS. Results: SI-Minority participants reported more SV victimization compared to the non-minorities. However, this increased risk was not moderated by minority identificati...

Childhood sexual abuse is linked to internalising disorders in later life. In older adults, SV occurs more often than previously believed. Moreover, health care workers lack the skills to address SV in later life. Studies researching the mental health impact of lifetime SV, i.e., SV during childhood, adulthood, and old age, are lacking. Between July 2019 and March 2020, 513 older adults living in Belgium participated in structured face-to-face-interviews. Selection occurred via a cluster random probability sampling with a random walk finding approach. Depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) were measured using validated scales. Participants were asked about suicide attempts and self-harm during their lifetime and in the past 12 months. SV was measured using behaviourally specific questions based on a broad SV definition. We found rates for depression, anxiety, and PTSD of 27%, 26%, and 6% respective...

However, with slight adaptations of wording in the exercises, it can easily be used in any other intercultural setting where prevention of SGBV is at stake. The purpose of the "Make it Work!"-manual is to: a) Develop a better understanding of the factors that influence SGBV b) Increase communication skills on sexual health and SGBV c) Stimulate group cohesion with the working group of professionals and residents in prevention of SGBV and promotion of health. ‘Make it Work!’ consists of five different modules: Getting started & wrapping up, Sexual & reproductive health & rights; Communication health & SGBV; Gender and Sexual & Gender-based violence. Every module has a logical build-up of exercises and information. We indicate what the aims are, what material yo...

Via a systematic academic literature review and a critical interpretive synthesis of policy frameworks, this review aimed to assess interventions and policies that work to improve the accessibility and the quality of maternal health care for migrants in the WHO European Region. The review demonstrated that most migrant women face poorer maternal health outcomes than non-migrant women throughout the WHO European Region. Identified risk factors are not only linked to pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period but also to events before conception. Migrant women’s access to maternal health care is jeopardized by restricted entitlement and problems with familiarity, knowledgeability, acceptability, availability and affordability. Assuring universal access to care and providing culturally sensitive care will enhance access and quality of maternal health care and eventu...

There is growing evidence in the literature that the majority of medical doctors do not recognize the signs and symptoms of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) or its impact on women’s as well as men’s health. It is considered by many as a social or cultural issue. Regarding the perceptions of how medical doctors should address IPV, survivors agree that the first thing that physicians should bear in mind is that anyone can be a survivor of IPV and second that IPV is not only sexual assault. Lack of skills and resources to manage IPV, time constraints, discomfort with the subject, limited referral points, sharing the same cultural and gender norms of survivors, are some of the reasons why there is resistance among medical doctors to address IPV.
General objective
To identify ways to improve curricula on IPV mitigation-content in order to enhance prevention and medical care in Mozambique.

In general, the quality of care for survivors of IPV has been poor worldwide. Academic literature suggests that IPV should be introduced in the preclinical and continued in clinical years, however, few medical schools adequately address IPV contents.
