Via narrative inquiry I compare the working of emotions and affective solidarity in narratives of 15 male and female change agents at nine universities in four countries. The analysis shows that both male and female change agents mobilise different types of masculinities to foster gender equality: chivalrous masculinity, disruptive masculinity and inclusive masculinity. This paper contributes to the gender equality change literature by theorising masculinities as not only hindering but also potentially transforming organisations in the direction of gender equality. The interplay between knowledge and affect in the narratives of gender equality change agents suggests that interventions should aim to move emotions and support affective solidarity through recognising and unders...

The chapter contextualizes and describes legislated, socio-political and organizational practices... more The chapter contextualizes and describes legislated, socio-political and organizational practices in managing diversity in three countries, namely India, Pakistan, and South Africa. The three countries serve as examples of emerging countries that have historical linkages with each other. Examples of how organizations within each country are responding to macro-level legislative practices are provided, highlighting the tensions and inconsistencies in applying legislation and its intent whilst dealing with country-specific realities. Diversity contrasts, such as integrating minorities in India and Pakistan, versus the integration of the majority in South Africa, are discussed, and attention is drawn to the emphasis placed on diversity categories such as gender and race. The chapter concludes with an overview of the differences in diversity management practices in the three countries.

It affects the framing of research questions, the selection of research strategies, the collection of sources and analysis of data, the assessment of the role of the researcher and the theoretical contribution the research makes. Examining diversity in organizations from critical perspectives calls for research questions that, for example, examine organizational norms, reveal the intersection of different identity categories, or examine the interplay between agency and structure. They authors plea for taking the empirical perspective of the marginalized ‘other’ in the centre of the analysis and for an active reflection upon the role of the researchers in producing knowledge. Such an approach would takes both the agency of the researcher and the examined into consideration.

Based on in-depth interviews with men and women academics in a Dutch university, five discursive strategies are distilled that reconcile contradictory claims of academia and parenthood. Parents are conforming, suffering or fighting dominant discourses, are optimistic about or pragmatically arranging academia and parenthood. These discursive strategies illustrate agency of parents, simultaneously subscribing to dominant discourses and negotiating alternative stances. Furthermore, from focus groups with leaders we distilled how the material structure of different schools, reflected in the rules and procedures regulating standards to which institutions and individuals are held, sets limits to discursive strategies that academics adopt. We identify the constraints and room for agency and argue that agency can only lead to transformation when transcending individual awareness by moving towards collective action.

Design/methodology/approach The study applies a practice theory lens to the case study of a Belgian university implementing a gender quota by performing 26 semi-structured interviews with actors, and collecting and analyzing relevant organizational documents. Findings This study shows that university actors implement gender quotas through three practices: gender-specific calls, scouting and “playing around”. Identifying this variation in practices helps to understand both actors’ sense-making of compliance with gender quotas and women’s decision-making power in academic bodies. Research limitations/implications This study explores how practices interact with the organization’s broader context and its power dynamics. In future studies, adding ethnographic observations would...

Using the criteria of feasibility, consistency and coordination, we discuss the GEP design of the six GEP implementing partners separately and then come up with recommendations. The evaluation shows all GEP implementing partners are well ahead in developing GEPs for their local institutions, but ran into a number of challenges throughout this process. These challenges included the tight timeframe of Deliverables and activities in the first project year (2019) and the delay in institutional decision-making between March and May 2020 due to the COVID-19 virus. The GEP development also presented opportunities, which included the factual overviews achieved in the participatory gender audits and the involvement of stakeholders in these audits, and in data collection and development of the GEPs....
