More specifically, parents of 96 children with developmental delays assessed their children’s adaptive and maladaptive behaviours and rated their own perceived levels of stress as well as their perceptions of care from service providers. Findings indicated that children from the community-based sites were perceived as having less severe social skill deficits than those from centre-based sites. Regarding parental stress, mothers from community-based settings reported more challenges with their child’s father than did the mothers from centre-based settings; and fathers from the community-based settings reported more challenges related to their health than did the fathers from the centre-based settings. Regarding care, parents from the centre-based settings had more positive percept...

Children exhibiting externalizing or internalizing behavioral problems who attended Head Start Programs were targeted for this intervention. During the first 2 years of the project, a manual-based program was conducted. The last 3 years of the project involved delivery of the parent–teacher training program through a series of videotapes and accompanying manuals. Children were randomly assigned to either an experimental or no treatment control group. The effectiveness of the intervention within the experimental group was assessed primarily through a pretest–posttest, experimental–control, group repeated-measures design. Direct behavioral observations did not indicate clinically relevant improvements in behavior; however, parents ’ and teache...

A renewed call for enhanced communication and collaboration between school psychology and medicin... more A renewed call for enhanced communication and collaboration between school psychology and medicine is envisioned, in light of a transdisciplinary model, where school psychologists, family physicians, and other health professionals transcend disciplinary boundaries. Recommendations for optimal communication and collaboration are described, as well as challenges inherent in such an endeavor. School psychologist–physician collaboration has the potential to result in significant improvements in outcomes for families and children with developmental disabilities. A case illustration highlights the major points mirrored in the discussion, and conclusions are drawn regarding necessary components for meaningful change to occur.
