Data were obtained by conducting a survey (N = 581) in Norway, Finland and Russia. A Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) provided a model with a three-factor solution consisting of factors: the perception of the teacher, anxiety towards science and mathematics, and motivation. The results suggest that most students are motivated to study sciences and mathematics. Data analysis indicate gender differences in attitudes to students’ future studies and career plans. Most girls recognized the importance of these subjects for their future studies and careers, while boys showed more interest than girls in local career opportunities in industry. Teachers have a significant role in directing students’ attitudes toward science and mathematics. Students experienced that the teachers who use innovative teaching approaches, both motivat...

It is shown that the anthropocentric paradigm dominates in modern scientific knowledge. A linguistic persona is viewed as a certain type of linguistic identity functioning within the specific ways to exchange communicative information. The epistemology of scientific approaches and research concepts is regarded in the personological way. Universal and national and cultural ways of a person’s verbalization are associated with a certain type of categorization of reality. The prospects of studying ways to verbalize the linguistic identity are viewed within the scope of the comprehensive analysis of communicative behavior based on the interdisciplinary approach. Using this method allows separating additional parameters of a linguistic persona of any type. The elements of the institutional linguistic persona are reviewed.

We discuss the post-Soviet “uncontrolled” state of sovkhoism in Murmansk Region reindeer husbandry. We argue that the key descriptor of the state of reindeer husbandry: the head-count (pogolovye) is often an arbitrary figure in a subsidy-producing narrative. In it, overall head-count numbers tend to be inflated, while a critical differentiation between the categories of personal vs. private reindeer is obliterated. Further, the head-count/subsidies narrative reproduces the central features of Soviet-era socio-economy of sovkhoism. The present, post-Soviet state of this process, we discuss as lacking previously existing mechanism of outside control. We conclude that reindeer husbandry in the Russian Far North is in need of returning to a relatively controlled state by the introduction of independent and publicly transparent controlling agency. Non-sovkhoist, “fully private” development is seen to be unrealistic at this stage, apart from isolated cases in the region concerned.

Research paper thumbnail of Pre-emptive mobilities: Russian real estate abroad (the case of owners from Murmansk Region)

Acta Borealia, 2016

ABSTRACT The article discusses mobilities connected with Russian real estate acquisition abroad d... more ABSTRACT The article discusses mobilities connected with Russian real estate acquisition abroad during the post-Soviet decades. We take the specific case of Murmansk Region as a source location. Our main argument is that such mobilities are motivated to a significant extent by a search of risk-free destinations and thus reflect perception of insecurity at home. The empirical data reveal the predominantly post-Soviet middle class nature of this movement, as well as its trans-generational agenda. We claim that the movement is pre-emptive in the sense of establishing a foothold abroad in view of possible negative economic and political developments at home. Theorizing this phenomenon requires placing it in a politically informed and temporally extended perspective. We conclude that Russian real estate acquisition abroad reveals divergences between current ideological rhetoric of the political leadership, on the one hand, and preferred courses of action by the post-Soviet middle class, on the other hand.

In the modern context, the internationalization of higher education serves as a strategy for active introduction of the international dimension into all the basic spheres of university life and turns out to be a much wider phenomenon than just a simple combination of various types of international activities. As a constantly evolving process, internationalization implies the continuous transformation of various educational areas and acts as a catalyst for external changes occurring in education. Despite the fact that in the basic documents regulating the functioning of flagship universities, international activities are not singled out as a separate area, the Murmansk Arctic State University (MASU) includes an international component in its strategic development program, assuming...

The methodology is based on the informationconstructivist approach in pedagogy. The structure of foreign language competence is presented, which includes linguistic, discursive, strategic, sociocultural, pragmatic and personal components. The results showed that with the help of WebQuests it is possible to activate the extracurricular work with students and control it remotely in a prepared and didactically structured Internet-environment.

The authors analyze in detail the specificity of developing and implementing the Norwegian-Russian Master Degree Programme in Borderology, the participants of which are the University of Nordland and Murmansk State Humanities University. Cross-border cooperation between Universities, developing in the dialogue of different cultures, is interpreted as “the zone of innovations”, within the framework of which a new multicultural educational environment and new teaching methodology appear.

The authors reveal a subjective-significant conditions of successful self-realization in university learning. Summarizing the obtained data, the authors disclosed specific functions of modern ICT in the framework of a two-contour model, which activate these conditions and modalities in the course of learning. The first contour includes the actual functions ICT aimed at activating the students' learning opportunities. Based on the methodology of socio-cultural determination, the authors propose to apply largescale civilizational dimension for understanding the higher school's innovative mission. This dimension covers a range of central ideas in the history of the higher school development in the framework of such dominants as: social-centered, theology-centered, anthropocentric, profession-centered, scientificcentered, ideology-focused, market-focused. Each of these models is defined by influence of a certain cultural tradition which sets priorities for education and innovative practice. The strengthening of higher school innovative potential can be promoted by the simultaneous presence and interweaving of different dominants. Meanwhile, the leading role has to belong to person-centered dominant which gives the chance for self-realization of the personality and for carrying out fruitf...
