Dissolved CO2 forms an acidic environment which could modify rock-fluid interaction. One of the phenomena that could happen due to this interaction is clay swelling which may affect enhanced oil recovery performance. Several experiments were conducted in a number of sandstone core samples, i.e. Imbibition test, Core flood test, Conductivity test, and pH measurement. Imbibition test was conducted to evaluate CO2-saturated brine (approached with carbonic acid) performance toward oil recovery during five days measurement compared with brine imbibition performance. Moreover, core flood experiment was run to determine the effect of dissolved CO2 in brine on injection in sandstone. This is simulated by injecting brine (base case) followed by carbonic acid under 68.3OC. Thus, conductivity and pH of the imbibed fluids (before after running imbibition test) were measured to justify occurrence of cat...

Therefore, it is imperative to increase national oil production by optimizing the mature fields through the implementation of successful EOR technology. Out of this approach, a comprehensive study has been carried out on the targeted field by exploring the potential of surfactant-polymer (SP) flooding. This article describes the formulation design, optimization, and lessons learned leading up to a successful and robust chemical EOR formulation designing for a low permeability and high clay (>20% clay) containing Indonesian oil field. The detailed workflow consists of analysis of fluid and rock characterization, tailor-made SP formulation designing, optimization and coreflood validation as presented in previous papers (Bazin, 2010). A series of surfactant formulation were designed and screened synthetically through a validated High Throughput Screening (HTS) methodology using...

To improve production, surfactant injection, is being studied to be employed in the field. The main objective of this study is to identify parameters that affect oil production increase. History match of the pilot test was carried out to improve the reliability of the reservoir model, hence improving the prediction result of surfactant injection forecast. History match of the pilot test has been carried out using CMG STARS commercial simulator by considering mechanism inferred from laboratory evaluation such as wettability alteration, surfactant retention, interfacial tension reduction and improvement of mobility control due to lower oil-surfactant emulsion viscosity. These parameters are initially perceived from laboratory result, upscaling and adjustment is applied to field model to further on do sensitivity study. Sensitivity analysis of every parameter is pro...

Research paper thumbnail of Study of Non-Newtonian fluid flow in porous media at core scale using analytical approach

Polymer as non-Newtonian fluid has unique behavior whose viscosity changes over various shear rate. This behavior creates unsuitable conditions which can lead to ineffective sweep efficiency improvement. The challenging issue in characterizing the in situ polymer rheology is how to construct the in situ Power Law model since the in situ viscosity cannot be measured directly. In this study, we use an analytical model to construct the in situ Power Law model. The model combines material balance equation, modified Darcy equation for non-Newtonian fluid flow, and equation of state. The model is solved for early (transient) time and late (steady-state) time. Coreflooding results in Berea Sandstone with 2000 and 500 ppm HPAM polymer injection are used for model’s simulations. Rheometer measurements are also used for comparison. The overall simulation results show there is no difference in flow behavior index between rheometer and porous media. The same fluid definitely gives the same flow behavior index through different measurement methods. However, there is significant difference in flow consistency index. It is caused by the effect of porous media’s tortuosity. The quantity of the skin parameter also depicts the thinning and thickening phenomena.

The sulfonated alkyl ester has unique chemical structures that aimed to combine the advantages of ester-based and sulfonate-based surfactant in one compound. This surfactant was studied for its performance to reduce interfacial tensions in a wide range of salinity with monovalent and divalent ions and in a light and heavy oil samples. The study showed that the sulfonated alkyl ester surfactant gives a good performance in a light oil sample in a high monovalent ion concentration and also give a good performance in a heavy oil sample in both low and high concentration of monovalent and divalent ions solution.

Research paper thumbnail of A New Mechanistic Model for Predicting Dynamic Corrosion-Erosion in Gas Production Pipeline under the Influence of FeS Scale

SPE/IATMI Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition, 2015

This paper presents a study about corrosion-erosion phenomenon in natural gas production pipeline... more This paper presents a study about corrosion-erosion phenomenon in natural gas production pipeline when FeS scale is formed on the inner surface of the pipeline. FeS scale is chosen here because its reaction is faster and more reactive than the other scale such as FeCO3. A literature study was firstly conducted to develop the idea of corrosion-erosion model. Several phenomena were considered to be the best to describe corrosion-erosion process. Then, the mathematical model to calculate corrosion-erosion rate was derived. The corrosion-erosion process was divided into two steps: fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena to establish corrosion-erosion environment and diffusion phenomena to make the corrosion-erosion happened. The first phenomena were modeled using Thermodynamics equation with considering Joule Thomson effect and gas flow equation (Katz for vertical-inclined tubing and Panhandle-B for horizontal pipeline). The second phenomena consisted of mass transfer equations including...

Secondary batteries using a liquid electrolyte have weaknesses, such as prone to leakage and difficulty in its packing. A solid polymer electrolyte is one solution to resolve this problem. This study was conducted to determine the effect of succinyl group and lithium perchlorate on chitosan membranes as the polymer electrolyte. The succinyl chitosan was obtained by reacting chitosan with succinic anhydride in various compositions. Polymer electrolyte membranes were derived from succinyl chitosan with different ratios of lithium perchlorate. The deacetylation degree of chitosan was determined by 1 H-NMR spectrum is 80.26%. Synthesis of succinyl chitosan has been successfully carried out, which is indicated by the characteristic peaks of 1 H-NMR spectrum at chemical shift value of 2.7 ppm-2.9 that correspond to the signal proton from methilen of succinyl groups of the succinyl chitosan. The substitution degree of N-succinyl chitosan that was determined by NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) was 13.75% for Chi-SC 1:1 and 70.84% for Chi-SC 1:3. The presence of succinyl groups on chitosan can increase ionic conductivity values of the membrane, but the tensile strength of membrane decreases. The N-Succinyl chitosan membrane with degree substitution of 70.84% and lithium perchlorate ratio of 5% (w/w) showed the ionic conductivity of 8.04 Â 10 À2 S.cm À1. Therefore, the membrane of succinyl chitosan-lithium with 5% (w/w) lithium perchlorate could be potentially used as a polymer electrolyte for lithium-ion battery applications.
