The participants were 30 female office workers who were divided into two groups and exposed to two light conditions (blue-enriched white light and white light) in a counterbalanced order. Mood, sleepiness and light perception were measured three times a day on 2 days of each week. More pronounced effects of blue-enriched white light on energetic arousal were found in the morning and at midday when compared to the other times of the working day. At the beginning and the end of the work day, the workers seemed to be more sensitive to the brightness of blue-enriched white light while throughout the whole work day they seemed to be similarly sensitive to colour temperature.

The aim of this study is to analyze the relationships between occupational burnout and stress in context of the attitude towards shiftwork and work satisfaction. Material and methods: The study included 250 nurses aged between 22 and 54 with an average of 12 years work experience. The following research methods have been used: Burnout Inventory (MBI), Effort – Reward Imbalance, Attitude Towards Shiftwork Scale (ATSS) and Manual for Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. Results: The effort invested in work turned out to be the only significant predictor of emotional exhaustion. It explained up to 31% of variance in emotional exhaustion in the group of both low work satisfaction and negative attitude towards shiftwork. Conclusion: The study showed that more attention needs to be paid to efforts invested in work, as well as rewards, and the balance between rewards and efforts in the group of low w...

However, the role of individual differences in it has not yet been explored. The aim of this experiment was to examine whether chronotype could moderate the monochromatic blue light effect on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity with regard to the timing of exposure. The participants were 30 young male volunteers. A within-subjects counterbalanced design was applied. There were two light conditions comparable in luminance: Monochromatic blue light of 460 nm and polychromatic white light of 6.5 lux. EEG measurements were taken after 4 hours of exposure in the morning, afternoon, and evening. EEG spectral power was categorized into five frequency ranges: delta, theta, alpha1, alpha2, and beta. Chronotypes were assessed by the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. A mixed analysis of variance was applied. Significant interactions between chronotype, light conditions, and the time of the day were found in theta and alpha...

Research paper thumbnail of The impact of night work on subjective reports of well-being: an exploratory study of health care workers from five nations

METHODS: The respondents from each nation were sorted into night worker and non-night worker groups. Worker perceptions of being physically tired, mentally tired, and tense at the end of the workday were examined. Subjective reports of perceived felt age were also studied. For each of these four dependent variables, an ANCOVA analysis was carried out. Hours worked per week, stability of weekly work schedule, and chronological age were the covariates for these analyses. RESULTS: The results clearly support the general proposal that natio...

Do pomiaru różnic indywidualnych posłużył Inwentarz Typu Okołodobowego. Uzyskane wyniki poddano mieszanej analizie wariancji z powtarzany...

Circadian type measured by Circadian Type Inventory (DiMilia, Smith i Folkard, 2005) has two dimensions: languidity (languid - vigorous) and fl exibility (fl exible - rigid). 30 young men took part in counterbalanced repeatedmeasures experiment with blue and white light conditions emitted at three times of day (morning, afternoon, and evening). Mood was measured with Thayer’s Activation-Deactivation Adjective Check List after short (30 minutes) and prolonged (4 hours) exposure. Results showed that languidity moderated blue light effect in two characteristics of mood: tension and calmness. In blue light when compared to white light conditions languid types were tenser (in both short and prolonged exposure) and calmer after prolonged exposure than vigoro...

Stimuli processing speed from the 24-hour constant routine periods (06.00-06.00 h) of a larger experiment were analysed for the purpose of this paper. Parallel sets of words and pictures were exposed laterally using a purpose-designed computer program. The subjects reacted to pictures or words by pressing appropriate buttons. The significant dominant ultradian rhythms (around 4 h) in the processing speed of words addressed to the right hemisphere were found and of pictures addressed to the left hemisphere. Longer significant dominant periodicities (around 12 h) appeared in the processing speed of words addressed to the left hemisphere and of pictures (around 8 h) addressed to the right hemisphere. Ultradian rhythmicity of the central nervous system functioning is suggested.

Two groups of female steel plant shift- (n = 54) and dayworkers (n = 54) were matched for age, job tenure, marital status, number, and age of children. The control group was made up of 2 subgroups of dayworkers with (n = 29) and without (n = 25) shiftwork experience. The subjects answered questionnaires on morningness, flexibility, languidity, neuroticism, extroversion, reactivity, and attitude towards shiftwork. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed on the data of experimental group and control subgroups separately. Amongst current shiftworkers, the best predictors of attitude towards shiftwork were flexibility of sleeping habits and the ability to overcome drowsiness. Amongst former shiftworkers attitude was determined primarily by reactivity, but in the dayworkers without shiftwork experience no predictors of the attitude were found. The results imply that circadian and personality characteristics related to shiftwork adjustment contribute in determining attitude towards shiftwork.
