BOVINE HERPES VIRUS 1 (BHV-1) IS AN IMPORTANT CAUSE OF MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN CATTLE AND THE BOVINE PARAINFL UENZA 3 (PI-3) VIRUS CAUSES A FEBRILE, HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS PNEUMONIA OF ACUTE COURSE AFFECTING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CATTLE. DIRECT IMMUNOPEROXIDASE (DIP) AND DIRECT IMMUNOFL UORESCENCE (DIF) TESTS FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF BHV-1 AND PI-3 IN NASAL SECRETIONS WERE STANDARDIZED AND ESTABLISHED AT CENSA. THE DIAGNOSTIC KITS WERE VALIDATED, INSPECTED AND REGISTERED. THE KITS WERE USEFUL TO DETECT VIRAL CONTAMINATION IN CELL CULTURES; AS WELL AS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF CALVES FREE OF PI-3 AND HPV-1, FOR DIAGNOSTIC SEVICES IN PREPUTIAL WASHES OF SEROREACTIVE OF CALVES BULLS DURING ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION; AND FOR THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF VESICULAR DISEASES. A total of 597 sera samples of healthy adults, coming from Pinar del Rio, Habana, Ciudad Habana and Villa Clara was analyzed by an Indirect ELISA. The 25.9% of the samples studied was positive to antibodies against BLV. The results obtained coincide with previous reports for the region, where there is a high prevalence of antibodies to this virus. The study allowed to obtain information about the presence of antibodies to BLV in adults. The results suggest the necessity of carrying out a survey in order to determine seroprevalence in representativ e herds of the whole country, keeping in mind that the major economic impact of the disease is on the international trade.

Research paper thumbnail of Genetic diversity of Taenia solium cysticerci from naturally infected pigs of central Mexico

The genetic variability among cysticerci from the same pig and that from different pigs was assessed by random amplified polymorphic DNA markers (RAPDs), through the percentage of polymorphic loci, the number of effective alleles, the expected heterozygosity and the Shannon index. The parasite population's reproductive structure was estimated through the association index (I(A)), and the degree of genetic differentiation and variation was determined using AMOVA. Using six different random primers, and a total of 181 cysticerci from 14 pigs, 88 different loci were amplified: 85% were polymorphic between pigs and 24% within pigs. The phenogram grouped the cysticerci into eight major clusters, with differences in the genetic distances among all cys...

To understand the causes of the spread of the disease and design strategies for fungal detection in clinical and environmental samples, scientists have resorted to molecular tools that allow fungal detection in a natural environment, reliable identification in clinical cases and the study of biological characteristics, such as reproductive and genetic structure, demographic history and diversification. We conducted a review of the most important molecular markers in the epidemiology of Coccidioides spp. and the diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis. A literature search was performed for scientific publications concerning the application of molecular tools for the epidemiology and diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis. The use of molecular markers in the epidemiological study and diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis has allowed for the typing of Coccidioides spp. isolates, improved understanding of their mode of reproduction, genetic variation and speciation and resulted in the development specific, rapid and sensitive strategies for detecting the fungus in environmental and clinical samples. Molecular markers have revealed genetic variability in Coccidioides spp. This finding influences changes in the epidemiology of coccidioidomycosis, such as the emergence of more virulent or antifungal resistant genotypes. Furthermore, the molecular markers currently used to identify Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are specific and sensitive. However, they must be validated to determine their application in diagnosis. This manuscript is part of the series of works presented at the "V International Workshop: Molecular genetic approaches to the study of human pathogenic fungi" (Oaxaca, Mexico, 2012).

Bovine Herpes Virus 1 (BHV-1) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in cattle and the Bovine Parainfl uenza 3 (PI-3) virus causes a febrile, highly contagious pneumonia of acute course affecting different types of cattle. Direct immu- noperoxidase (DIP) and direct immunofl uorescence (DIF) tests for the diagnosis of BHV-1 and PI-3 in nasal secretions were standardized and established at CENSA. The diagnostic kits were validated, inspected and registered. The kits were useful to detect viral contamination in cell cultures; as well as for the identifi cation of calves free of PI-3 and HPV-1, for diagnostic ser- vices in preputial washes of seroreactive bulls during artifi cial insemination; and for the dif- ferential diagnosis of vesicular diseases. Samples were taken from animals with respiratory signs to determine the role of these agents in...
