PhD students, supervisors and higher education institution, constitute three keys for the same door (doctoral education), and without one of them, the door can´t be well open. Choose which of them should be analyzed is the researcher responsibility, as present data and look carefully to it. During the last years' doctoral education and the doctoral supervision process at UNL as been studied, looking to PhD students, supervisors and institution [1-5]. In the present research, the focus is on supervisor perception. It is important to know supervisor opinion, to attempt and captures their perceptions regarding the doctoral supervision process. When the supervisor thinks and responds to surveys regarding supervision, he/she is presenting an image of himself/herself. This study occurred among the PhD sup...

But it is difficult to capture students’ attention to it, and the loss of students in the STEM field hinders society's development, and Portugal is no exception. The students feel that this field is difficult, they feel disappointed as the academic outcomes are more difficult to obtain in the upper secondary, and they easily give up on this area and/or choose other fields. To mesmerize students in the science area and reinforce their positive emotions a project was elaborated based on flipped classrooms with a laboratory station model and started in September 2021. A study case was designed to perceive the impact of the laboratory station methodology and flipped classrooms on the motivation of upper-secondary science students. Self-response questionnaires were applied before and after an interventio...

With the pandemic, Portuguese students that enrolled in the 10th grade in September 2021, had lower experience in the experimental work, since practical classes at school were suspended from mars 2019 to September 2021. So, students had difficulties in measuring or working with simple laboratory apparatus. They had difficulties in giving meaning to the experimental procedure, describing an observation, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting the results. In this context, it was necessary to have a learning and teaching approach different from the one they had in the last three years, to develop the skills they need. The first proposal was to use “Practical work by laboratory stations but it was not enough in the present context. So, a new learning and teaching project that blended digital tools/platforms and practical work in the laboratory was conceived. This le...

In this context, the doctoral research project must correspond to the demands of both areas. The PhD. supervisor must be a team leader and, at some time, a doctorate guide, and a teacher. The PhD students must learn how to be a part of the research team, and simultaneously develop their research skills and knowledge. But PhD continues to be an individual and solitary journey, being the justification for it, the originality of knowledge created during the PhD. In the last years, in Portugal, PhD students and PhD supervisors were auscultated. The supervisors’ rules were captured, doctorate experiences were collected, and supervision processes were analysed and deepened knowledge about doctoral education. But still, this vision is incomplete not only because few supervisors took part in the research (first because the sample population were limited to one Portuguese University (NOVA Lisbon Univer...

It does not need more than 2 µL of electrolyte, sample or working solution, his support material is paper, and the working electrode which is based on carbon ink can incorporate enzymes and cofactors. To test this concept we started this investigation using the NADH/NAD + redox couple which is an omnipresent coenzyme in living systems but is also a challenge to electrochemistry. The paper sensor fabrication was simple, rapid and cheaper. NADH was incorporated in the carbon ink by mixing both and, this mixture was used to print the working electrode. The direct electrochemical system NADH/NAD + signal obtained, using this device, appeared at low potentials. A quasi-reversible diffusional redox process was achieved and regeneration of the NADH after oxidation was reached. This small paper device was not only used to study the redox process of NAD + /NADH, but also its behavior in the presence of electroactive (ascorbic acid) and non-eletroactive species (glucose).

Associated with education comes the pedagogy that is implemented and the supervision process. In this research work, we start to study the pedagogy and the supervision practices that were perceived by doctoral students in a specific population Science Education PhD. First, an exploratory survey was applied to PhD students that were participating in a national meeting of Science Education for young researchers. Secondly a similar survey was applied, but in another specific context –students enrolled in Science Education PhD at Nova Lisbon University (UNL). Some similarities were found: the pedagogy perceived by students and the evidence that students’ don ́t monitor or evaluate the research process during the PhD. In addition, some differences were also verify not only in the supervision practices, but as well as in the supervisor engage in the PhD research process.

Aiming at deepening knowledge about the doctoral student supervision experience in Nova Lisbon University, an exploratory study was conducted in the area of Science Education. The time to complete the doctoral degree in Educational Science at Nova Lisbon University (UNL) is not the ideal. This research work intends to bring some light to this issue and produce knowledge about it. The study focus the students‟ point of view regarding the doctoral supervision process. To accomplish the referred goal a survey was applied, to doctoral students that are enrolled in this doctoral program at UNL.

The Knowledge construction occurs in a specific scientific area with rules previously defined. The PhD students must enter is this new environment - academic environment - and learn how to deal with it. In this sense, the knowledge construction includes a socialization process which implies the integration and acculturation processes. Even though, an original research will emerge, as it is developed by the student alone and new knowledge will be constructed. Peers, as others researchers in the area, will be important in times of disappointments, difficulties and stress reinforcing the students´ well-being. During the PhD, the supervisor should be a functional leader, being the light in these bad time moments and a mind developer always. So loneliness and isolation is no l...

It ́s a period of construction of the research and is also a time for integration in the academy, in the field of research, and at the higher education system. During the enrolment in the PhD, the person's growth and the live experience change the perception that the doctorate has of the PhD and the research journey. The experiences as a doctoral student and as a researcher under construction, who is supervised/oriented/ guided by a supervisor, shape the way of thinking and action regarding the institution and the academy but also influence the way they see and felt the PhD journey and their beliefs. It is argued in this paper that an initial (de)formed perception of the real PhD journey and supervision, may influence the satisfaction of the students with it, and the disappointment impact the option to leave the academy or to continue. The current paper describes the change in the perception, motives, an...

In this context a versatile paper based biosensor, quickly, easily and cheaply fabricated is reported. The procedure of fabrication is based on the assumption that the introduction of the enzyme in the carbon ink will allow enzyme stabilization and facilitate the study of the catalysis of enzymes and the detection of substrates. To prove this concept we use the enzyme 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, in aqueous solution. This enzyme was chosen because it catalyzes the 3-β-hydroxybutyrate, which results from ketoacidosis. The quantification this substance in the diabetics' blood is very important as it can increase the reliability of the diagnosis of glycaemia. To prove the multi-use of this biosensor we not only study the redox process in steady state and during the catalytic process, but also detected and quantify the 3-β-hydroxybutyrate. Our results showed that it was possible to study the redox process that occurred during the catalysis and to confirm the amino acid residues that participate in it. It was also observed that glucose and ascorbic acid can interfere in the detection and quantification of the 3-β-hydroxybutyrate, what should be in mind when the quantification of the 3-β-hydroxybutyrate is made in blood samples.

In this sense, it's the bridge between two areas, the education system and the research system. It is the particular characteristic that makes doctoral education so important to a developer and innovative society. In Portugal only a few years ago, the doctoral education started being a research object. To underpin the knowledge about doctoral education at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, research aimed to capture the supervisor conceptions and perceptions was implemented. This paper aims to describe what was found and what was, in the context of a Portuguese university (that doesn't demand as rule supervisors have a pedagogical or even a supervision course (formation)), unpredicted and unexpected. The first effect of this research was to start supervisors' self-reflection about their practices and aims of supervision. The second was the emergence of difficulties assumed by the supervisors during the supervision process, not only related to the institution, but also to the students' motivation and engagement in the research process and the perception of the necessity of development skills to manage conflicts.

H... more Experimental work is essential for the development of scientific skills and student motivation. However, students are not always involved in the experimental work, and the development of scientific skills is compromised. In this study, the model of experimental teaching of Chemistry and Physics by laboratory stations is presented and its contribution to the promotion of self-efficacy and self-regulation is discussed. This model had underlying active learning, neuroeducation and was developed using a collaborative Peer Instruction approach. The regular use of laboratory stations during two years, in two classes of basic education, allowed not only counteracting the distance between the students and Physics and Chemistry but also improving the students' engagement in classrooms. The purposes of this implementation were to develop students' Chemistry and Physics knowledge, to engage students in the classroom activities, and develop scientific skills (handling equipment, making and describing observations, recording data, gave meaning to measurements, obtaining experimental results, discuss and analyse results, planning experiments to verify hypotheses). The promotion of collaborative work habits among students, critical thinking and the debate between peers as strategies to achieve significant learning were also other aims of this methodology.

Research, on doctoral supervision practices, and the supervisor ideal profile was carried out in a TOP 10 young European university, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The results show that meetings (individual or in groups) are the most implemented practice. Usually, students present orally, to a supervisor, the research that they already made regarding the initial work plane. Two supervisors' profiles emerge from the students' voices, the real and the ideal. The ideal supervisor profile that emerges from the questionnaires features supervisors who take students care, give feedback on work on time, and are honest and critical.

This University is less than fifty years old and it is growing, but a slight decrease in the doctoral population was observed in the last years, the completion times are not the ideal and attrition exists. So it is important to know the characteristics of the doctoral population of the University, in terms of profile and main difficulties, envisaging what can be done to promote lower attrition and shorter completion time. Using a national database (RAIDES) and public institutional documents, it was possible to initiate a research that aims at characterizing not only the student population, but also the supervision practices, monitorization and evaluation.
