Psidium guajava fruit from the family of Myrtaceae has gained attention for its antioxidant potential. This study was conducted to determine the effects of P. guajava fruit peel aqueous extract on oxidative stress of pancreas in streptozotocin-induced (45 mg/kg) diabetic rats. Diabetic rats were administered with 400 mg/kg of aqueous extract of P. guajava fruit peel daily for 28 days duration. The results showed that diabetic rats supplemented with P. guajava extract did not cause significant difference in blood glucose level (p>0.05) as compared with diabetic rats alone. For oxidative stress evaluation, malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl level were significantly lower and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) level were significantly higher (p<0.05) in P. guajava supplemented rats compared with non-sup...

Research paper thumbnail of Heavy metal concentration in body walls of Malaysian sea cucumbers

Concentrations of heavy metals were determined in the body walls of two species of sea cucumbers,... more Concentrations of heavy metals were determined in the body walls of two species of sea cucumbers, Stichopus hermanni Semper and Holothuria atra Jaeger, obtained from the tidal waters off Pulau Pangkor, Perak and Pulau Kapas, Terengganu. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu were determined after acid digestion by using atomic absorption spectrometer. Mercury concentration was determined by the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometer. The levels of Cd, Pb, and Hg were significantly higher in the body walls of holothuroids from Pulau Kapas than from the same species from Pulau Pangkor (p <0.05). The Pb content in the body walls of both the species from Pulau Kapas and Pulau Pangkor was found to be higher than the permissible level in the human body. The results obtained from our studies indicated that the uncontrolled dumping of industrial affluent from Perak, Selangor and Terengganu could possibly cause significant marine pollution problems which include heavy metal contamina...

Few published work on the digestive system of this animal are in isolated areas . As it is becoming more important as a laboratory ruminant model , the present study will provide additional and more comprehensive in formation on the animal , particularly on the morpho -physiology of its digestive tract . This study assists in the comparison of mousedeer with other ruminants and attempts to classify it in the most appropriate category of ruminants. Morphological study and distribution of lingual papillae showed that the mousedeer has a tongue similar to that of a pig which is a non - ruminant. However , it is still considered a ruminant because it has a compound stomach where the omasum is under developed.

The calcareous rings of both species each composed of ten plates knit together by connective tissues. The radial plate of H. atra was a square with a notch at the anterior part whereas in S. hermanni it was squarish consisting of 4 ridges in the anterior part with a notch at the posterior part. The interradial plates of both species were smaller than the radial plates. A ridge was present at the anterior part of the interradial plate in H. atra. In S. hermanii, the ridge at the anterior part of the interradial was thin and prominent. Under the scanning electron microscope the calcareous rings from the two species exhibited a mosaic of small, numerous spicules bound to each other.

This study was conducted from May to December 2000 to observe the changes on the level of knowledge, practice and attitude amongst nurses at the Kuala Krai Hospital, Kelantan on the practice of BSE after a health education intervention program was conducted. The objective of the study is to increase the practice of BSE among nurses in that hospital. The study was performed by pre and post intervention without comparison. Respondents consist of 43 nurses selected by random sampling. The instrument used in this study was by questionnaires through direct interview with the respondent. The health education intervention program includes talks, BSE demonstration, counseling and exhibition, was conducted to educate the nurses on the proper time, frequency and correct technique of BSE. The results of the study showed a s...
