Data were collected among 89 Moroccan-Dutch adolescents and 178 Dutch secondary school students. Moroccan-Dutch adolescents reported higher levels of life satisfaction.

Research paper thumbnail of Dimensionality of the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment: Evaluation with the Spanish Version

Spanish Journal of Psychology, 2013

In Study 1, the Spanish translation of items and their content analysis was carried out via cognitive interviews. In Study 2, the three-factor structure proposed by authors was tested in a sample of 417 adolescents (270 girls and 147 boys) using confirmatory analysis, and indexes showed a suboptimal fit. A principal component analysis yielded one-dimensional structures in father, mother and peer versions, explaining 54.3%, 50.8%, and 50.8% of the variance respectively. On the basis of the factor loadings and of the item-total correlations, a shortened version of the inventory was created. Convergent validity was tested with measures of family climate, parenting socialization and self-esteem. In Study 3, the one-dimension structure was confirmed in a new sample of 604 adolescents (335 girls and 269 boys). Based on all factor analyses and convergent validity indices obtained, we conclude that the Spanish IPPA questionnaire reliably and validly assesses adolescent attachment using only a dimension of attachment security.

Research paper thumbnail of Moral exemplars promote positive attitudes, beliefs, intentions, and behaviors toward outgroups during the COVID-19 pandemic: The explanatory role of self-transcendent emotions

We examined the effect of moral exemplars on outgroup attitudes, beliefs about the outgroup, intentions and behavior toward the outgroup, as well as the role of self-transcendent emotions in this link. Participants of an online panel-based experimental study (N = 651) were randomly assigned to either watch a video clip with a story about migrant essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., the moral exemplars condition) or to watch a neutral video involving migrants (i.e., the control condition), and were invited to fill in a questionnaire and donate money to an association fighting for immigrants’ rights. Compared to the control condition, participants in the moral exemplars condition manifested more positive outgroup attitudes, beliefs about the outgroup, and were more willing to help the outgroup, also via self-transcendent emotions. The exposure to the moral exemplars narrative was linked with more helping behavior (a donation to an NGO) only indirectly via self-transcendent emotions. Moral exemplars proved useful in promoting positive attitudes and prosociality toward immigrants.

Research paper thumbnail of Attachment to Parents and Aggressiveness in Adopted Adolescents: A Multi‐Sample Comparison Study

Journal of Research on Adolescence, Oct 31, 2018

This study examined adopted adolescents' levels of attachment security to parents and aggressiven... more This study examined adopted adolescents' levels of attachment security to parents and aggressiveness as compared to those of community nonadopted adolescents and of clinical nonadopted adolescents. Three different subsamples participated (n = 262): 101 community nonadopted adolescents (48.5% girls), 80 community adopted teens (65.0% girls), and 81 nonadopted counterparts (35.8% girls) who participated in a treatment program for youth with behavioral problems. There were no differences between community groups in attachment security or aggressiveness, whereas clinical nonadopted adolescents showed less attachment security and more aggressiveness than the other two groups. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of the potential healing impact that living with adoptive families could have on adopted teenagers' risk of maladaptive outcomes.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessing Sense of School Belonging Across Cultural Contexts Using the PSSM

Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, Oct 1, 2015

Despite its popularity, the factorial structure of the Psychological Sense of School Membership (... more Despite its popularity, the factorial structure of the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) Questionnaire remains controversial. The current study set out to clarify its structure across different cultural contexts. The study was carried out among 1,928 adolescents aged 11 to 20 years in the Netherlands, Kenya, Indonesia, and Spain. Item-based measurement models with a single factor did not show a good fit. A bifactor method (defining a method factor for negatively worded items) did not show a good fit either. However, when items were combined per target to be rated (school, student, teacher, other people, and self), measurement invariance of a one-factorial model was found. Internal consistencies observed across the cultural groups studied were high. In addition, an evaluation of functional equivalence indicated that the relationship between PSSM and life satisfaction was invariant across countries. Implications for assessment and future directions are discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Parenting practices, parental attachment and aggressiveness in adolescence: A predictive model

A total of 554 adolescents (330 girls and 224 boys), ages ranging between 16 and 19, completed measures of mothers' and fathers' parenting practices, attachment to mother and to father, and aggressiveness. Acceptance/ involvement of each parent positively predicted an adolescent's attachment to that parent, and coercion/imposition negatively predicted attachment to a lesser extent. Using structural equation modeling, a full mediation model provided the most parsimonious explanation for the data. With attachment in the model, the paths between the two parenting practices and aggressiveness were minor and statistically non-significant. Only attachment to the father, was predictive of adolescents' aggressiveness. Results are discussed in the light of the importance of the father-son/daughter relationship in adolescence.

The objectives of this study are to analyze the fluctuation of impulsivity of amateur AF between a basal context and a precompetitive one and, moreover, to compare the impulsivity of AF according to category, age and experience. Participants were 29 Spanish referees of 23.98 ± 2.66 years participated; 73.64 ± 7.15 kg; and 7.8 ± 2.6 seasons of experience on average. participated and data was collected from Impulsivity data were collected using the UPPS-P questionnaire in 57 matches of their corresponding categories and later, between 48 hours and 72 hours later, the questionnaire was carried out again as a basal intake. This study took place during the 2019-2020 season. The results indicated that the referees have higher levels of negative urgency, sensation seeking and total impulsivity in precompetitive states than in basal states (p <.05). Likewise, the SR with a higher category had lower levels of negative and positive urgency (p <.05). As a conclusion, amateur SR has greater impulsivity in pre-competition states and, furthermore, those with a higher category tend to have lower levels of impulsivity.

This shared emotional experience gives rise, in turn, to more intense emotions, this being one of the explanatory models of the positive psychological effects of collective participation. Through a quasi-longitudinal design of three measurement-times (N = 273, 65.9% women; age: 18–70, M = 39.43, SD = 11.64), the most massive social mobilization that is celebrated in favor of the Basque language in the Basque Country (Korrika) was analyzed. Repeated measures and sequential mediation analyzes supported the model.
