The discovery of the Indian natives and completely unknown species in Europe sparked a great interest in pioneers like Álvarez Chanca, Fernández de Oviedo, Cieza de León, Sahagún, Francisco Hernández, Acosta, Cobo or much later by Azara. In our opinion, these studies provided the basis for the study of animal behavior and emotions in the New and the Old World and allowed a new understanding of the Natural History and the relationship between structure and function. It is likely that these findings were crucial for the work of Charles Darwin three Centuries later. Moreover, it is suggested that the future development of Comparative Psychology based on Darwin and Romanes work, based its roots in the work and observations of these early pioneers.

The church, the nobility, and the kings were interested in protecting art and culture as a means to enhance and spread their power. Ever since the Renaissance, artistic patronage joined traders and professionals, grouped in the guilds. This provided greater freedom to the compositions of artists, and everyday life, the triumph of science, and industry began to appear in artwork. In the late 19th century, painting depicts the apotheosis of scientific progress of that era, and scientists became protagonists. The content of Sorolla's naturalism ranges from social themes to the exaltation of science. Sorolla painted two masterpieces: Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the microscope and A Research (in which are identified Madinaveitia, Gayarre, and Sandoval, and perhaps San Martin, among the colleagues and disciples). These paintings may be among the most outstanding world paintings of this genre

In the present study, we examined affective ratings and event-related brain responses from 18 healthy participants during an aversive conditioning task in which affective values of previously trained conditioned stimuli were modified through a blocking procedure. The task was divided into two phases. During the training phase, single stimulus A (e.g., red square) was always followed by aversive picture stimuli, while single stimulus B (e.g., yellow square) was signaling the absence of aversive stimulation. During the blocking phase, compound stimuli consisted of the combination of one single trained stimulus (A or B) and one new somatosensory stimulus were also followed by the presence of aversive stimulation. Results indicated that single stimulus A elicited greater ERP amplitudes and theta power, and was rated as more unpleasant than single stimulus B during the training phase. Moreover, single stimulus B elicited greater ERP amplitudes than stimulus A, as well as greater theta power and more unpleasant ratings during the blocking as compared with the training phase. By contrast, no changes in ERP amplitudes and theta power were observed for stimulus A. Our findings provide neurophysiological and behavioral evidence for an increased affective processing of conditioned stimuli when compound stimuli were introduced, but only if the target CS was previously trained to signal the absence of aversive stimulation.

However, very little is known about the genetic, behavioral, developmental and neurobiological basis of such a musical-pictorial “universal”. In an attempt to approach commonalities and differences between the psychology of music and pictorial art in Experiment 1 we investigated the emotional dimensions valence and arousal in a large sample (N =156, Mage = 21,44 years, SD = 3,89 years, range = 16–35 years) using a representative selection of musical and pictorial artistic stimuli. We found a stronger variability of valence and arousal with paintings and stronger effects of music on valence. In Experiment 2 (N =202, Mage = 21,35 years, SD = 3,57 years, range = 16–35 years) we present first quantitative data on the interaction between the two artistic categories of stimuli on a behavioral level, again observing effects of pictorial art and music on valence and arousal. Furthermore...

In the present experiment, we examined the effects of low (LSF, <15 cycles/image width) and high spatial frequency filtering (HSF, >25 cycles/image width) on brain processing of complex pictures depicting pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral scenes. Event-related potentials (ERP), percentage of recognized stimuli and response times were recorded in 19 healthy volunteers. Behavioral results indicated faster reaction times in response to unpleasant LSF than to unpleasant HSF pictures. Unpleasant LSF pictures and pleasant unfiltered pictures also elicited significant enhancements of P1 amplitudes at occipital electrodes as compared to neutral LSF and unfiltered pictures, respectively; whereas no significant effects of affective modulation were found for HSF pictures. Moreover, mean ERP amplitudes in the time between 200 and 500 ms post-stimulus were significantly greater for affective (pleasant and unpleasant) than for neutral unfiltered pictures; whereas no significant affective modulation was found for HSF or LSF pictures at those latencies. The fact that affective LSF pictures elicited an enhancement of brain responses at early, but not at later latencies, suggests the existence of a rapid and preattentive neural mechanism for the processing of motivationally relevant stimuli, which could be driven by LSF cues. Our findings confirm thus previous results showing differences on brain processing of affective LSF and HSF faces, and extend these results to more complex and social affective pictures.
