Japhet Makongo

My inspiration to continuous learn has been stimulated by my professional background in livestock science and management over the years of practices with pastoralists communities in Northern Tanzania. The one lesson which has captivated me was my realization of being humble to recognize, appreciated and learn how to interpreted the indigenous knowledge and practices of the communities I serve. Over the last thirty years of practices I have connected with other professionals and development practitioners at locally and internationally.to improve my academic competencies in fields of research, evaluations and monitoring for impart. I have become a good community based researcher, facilitator to engage communities find out critical issues that challenge their wellbeing and the environment and seek appropriate interventions to solve them. I want to keep learning and sharing new insights for a better world now and the future

The Working Paper Series HakiElimu has established the Working Paper Series (WPS) in order to reproduce meaningful analyses in an accessible format. The Series is expected to contribute to public debate on education and democracy issues. WPS includes reports and papers written by staff and members of HakiElimu, along with partner individuals and organizations. Some have been written specifically for the series, whereas others are reproductions of previous work. Most of the papers are works in progress and not meant to be definitive. This chapter presents a dialogue between Japhet Makongo, a community development worker based in ... more This chapter presents a dialogue between Japhet Makongo, a community development worker based in Tanzania, and Lin Bender, CEO of the philanthropic organisation, the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust in Victoria, Australia. Lin and Japhet have each worked on both ‘sides’ of the funding relationship and through their discussion they offer insights into the day-to-day realities of managing funding relationships. They analyse the risks and challenges involved, but also the possibilities for effective funding for community empowerment. Their discussion of funding speaks to perennially important themes within community development such as power, agency, community ownership, process versus outcome, and the meaning of ‘success’.
