Consequently, risk assessment andeffective inspection planning of naval ships under fatigue damage are needed to achieve economic and sustainableperformance of these structures. This paper presents a probabilistic framework for fatigue risk assessment and updating through inspection events. The computation associated with fatigue damage is performed using fracture mechanics and uncertainties are considered within this process.Furthermore, a quantitative risk assessment model using rating functions is presented to identify inspection priority among multiple fatigue-sensitive details. Bayesian techniques are adopted for reliability and risk updating of bothinspected and uninspected fatigue-sensitive details at component and system levels. Additionally, correlation of fatigue damage among different critical details is considered and incorporated within risk assessment and updating.A number of analyses are performed to investigate the fatigueriskranking assessment and updating. Applications are presented on anexisting tanker with multiple fatigue-sensitive details.

Described as the largest ebolavirus outbreak ever recorded, more than 28,000 people were affected with more than 11,000 deaths. The need for a proactive response to manage future outbreaks has led to the conception of the “Ebola Foresight” project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The project is implemented by a consortium including the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute, Njala University, and the Institut Pasteur de Guinée. It aims to build laboratory capacities in Sierra Leone and Guinea in order to ensure preparedness and a rapid response to potential future outbreaks of ebolaviruses or other emerging diseases. Further, a second focus of the project is to investigate the role of wildlife and livestock, in particul...

The nation's established diamond fields cover over 18,000 square kilometers (km 2) and are found mainly in the southeastern and eastern parts of the country. The mining sector employed about 14% of Sierra Leone's labour force, accounted for over 60% of export earnings and up to 20% of the country's GDP during the prewar period [

Research paper thumbnail of Exchange rate volatility and agricultural trade under policy reforms in South Africa

Development Southern Africa, 2006

Policy reforms have included trade and exchange rate policies to increase the country's international competitiveness, reduce poverty and promote economic growth. These reforms are facilitating the growth in agricultural trade and South Africa's reintegration into the global economy. Annual agricultural exports and imports have increased. This paper uses annual data and a vector error-correction model to investigate the supply and demand relationships for agricultural trade flows in South Africa during the past four decades. The results show that prices, real exchange rates, domestic production capacity and real incomes have significant impacts on the country's agricultural trade. In particular, exchange rate volatility has negative impacts. This cannot be viewed solely as an exogenous source of macroeconomic instability in South Africa, as domestic policies play a crucial role in influencing the movement of exchange rates.

PPP is very important for two main reasons: first, it can serve as a prediction model for exchange rates, and second, it can serve as a benchmark in judging the level of exchange rate movements. This article utilised the Johansen cointegration technique in examining whether or not there is empirical support for long-run PPP in Africa. Annual data were used for exchange rates and food price indices in 25 countries covering the 1958-97 period. The empirical evidence showed strong support for long-run PPP in Africa, thereby providing wider acceptance for the applicability of PPP in exchange rate and other macroeconomic adjustment policies.

We found support for PPP. Given the globalization of financial markets and their impacts on the macroeconomy, PPP is a useful guide for exchange rate policy reforms.
