Traditional forest dwelling communities are known to conserve their surrounding biodiversity, mostly with cultural perspectives and this indirectly preserve the resources for future generations. Raakhan Raans are privately owned grass sanctuaries which are protected from open grazing and other disturbances like fires and harvested sustainably. This is the first study of this tradition unique to the Western Ghats. Survey was conducted in 13 hamlets belonging to 11 village panchayats in Akole district of Maharashtra. Fully structured interview was conducted in all households of selected hamlets in a door-to-door manner. Using a detailed questionnaire we collected data on livestock, raakhan ran holdings and changes within last decade. The tradition is not unique to a particular community. It is a sustainable practice considering that grass is harvested after seed dispersal and some areas are left unharvested. The Raakhan Rans have been reducing over the last decade, though still maintained by large herders for fodder security. Special efforts are required to conserve the tradition and link it to protection of grassland biodiversity and dependent livelihoods.

This communication records a new location of this species from Nashik District which is the northeastern most record for this species. The small existing population in this new location is threatened by cattle grazing, and trampling by tourists.

It is assessed as Critically Endangered as per the IUCN red list criteria using primary and secondary information on trends in EOO, AOO and sub-populations. Factors affecting this species and its habitat, and community conservation efforts are described and recommendations are made for its protection.

Hindu Mahadeo Koli, Hindu Thakar and Hindu Kokna are the major tribes found in this area. Besides, Hindu Varli and Hindu Katkari are present in small numbers. These native people traditionally use many wild plants as vegetables in their day to day diets (Deshmukh & Waghmode, 2011). Some of these wild vegetables are very popular amongst the urban and semi-urban areas in the vicinity and therefore sold in the local weekly markets namely Trimbakeshwar and Harsul. Harvest and sale of wild vegetables generates seasonal localized employment opportunities to these local communities.
