Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopic maps in a sample of 532 S0 galaxies from the MaNG... more Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopic maps in a sample of 532 S0 galaxies from the MaNGA survey have unveiled the existence of inner rings (〈R〉 ∼ 1 R e) betraying ongoing star formation in a number of these objects. Activity gradients averaged over bins of galactocentric radius up to ∼1.5 R e have been measured in the subspace defined by the first two principal components of the optical spectra of these galaxies. We find that the sign of the gradients is closely related to the presence of such rings in the spectral maps, which are especially conspicuous in the equivalent width of the Hα emission line, EW(Hα), with a fractional abundance—21%–34%—notably larger than that inferred from optical images. While the numbers of S0s with positive, negative, and flat activity gradients are comparable, star-forming rings are largely found in objects for which quenching proceeds from the inside out, in good agreement with predictions from cosmological simulations studying S0 buildup. A...

This observational sample will be used in the future to derive new standards of normal atomic gas content that allow a statistical investigation of the HI properties of galaxies in differing environments of the local universe. As a previous step, we compare here morphological indicators, like color or light concentration index, of ALFALFA detections and non-detections in low density regions. Our examination is extended also to a small data set of isolated galaxies. This kind of analysis is necessary in order to characterize as accurately as possible the type of galaxies that ALFALFA is detecting. Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. To be published in the proceedings of...

Our analysis was based on the premise that the essential aspects of this scenario can be captured by replacing the physics of the central black holes with restrictions on their relative separation in phase space. We introduce several estimates of the DAGN fraction and infer predictions for the activity levels and resolution limits usually involved in surveys of these systems, assessing their dependence on the parameters controlling the length of both mergers and nuclear activity. Given a set of constraints, we find that the values adopted for some of the latter factors often condition the outcomes from individual experiments. Still, the results do not, in general, reveal very tight correlations, the clearest effect being the tend...

The density profile so predicted closely resembles that shown in N-body simulations at any epoch considered.

Galaxies of different types are found to be located in distinct bands in the bulge-to-disk luminosity ratio vs total luminosity diagram, allowing the determination of the typical bulge luminosity function of disk galaxies of different types from their respective total luminosity functions, along with a better characterization of morphological segregation among disk galaxies. No evidence for any bulge luminosity segregation is found, and disks appear to be less luminous with increasing local density.

With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. The book shows the enormous scientific interest of the Spanish astronomical community in the SKA and warrants an optimum scientific exploitation of the SKA by Spanish researchers, if Spain enters the SKA project.
