Research paper thumbnail of Cirrus cloud top-of-atmosphere radiance spectra in the thermal infrared

Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer, 1999

The sensitivity to a variety of assumptions concerning the cirrus cloud properties has been studied. The single scattering parameters were characterised using Mie theory for spheres, ray-tracing optics for hexagonal columns and T-Matrix method for spheroids. Simulations have been carried out for various ice crystal sizes, shapes and size distributions. A statistical method has been used on the simulated spectra to suggest combinations of wavelengths which might best be exploited for the retrieval of cirrus cloud optical properties from data anticipated from the next generation of high-resolution spaceborne spectrometers such as the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, due for launch on METOP-I in 2003.

Most children did not perceive stigma in participating in a

Influential histories of empire since the 1950s do not present empire as a phenomenon in its own right, and collapse into other totalising metaconcepts such as global capitalism or western cultural dominance. Challenging such approaches, this article argues for the return of an essentially political definition of empire with sovereignty at its core, which recognises that British assertions of sovereignty were incoherent, multiple, and mutually incompatible with one another. Tracing the history of conflict between different idioms of sovereign authority, it shows how the British empire was defined by a series of mutually self-contradictory ideas about what it was. It suggests that a recognition of the incoherence of imperial sovereignty offers new, more nuanced, read...

The roles of culture and religion are examined in reference to the participants’ community and social aging experiences. The researcher used a culturally relevant research paradigm [Diasporic African] incorporating indigenous methods [testifying] grounded in the participants’ cultural and religious identifies and experiences as older Christian Jamaicans of African descent. The use of testimonies is described in Stanfield’s (1998) work on ethic modeling in qualitative research design. Demographic information and life histories focussing on community roles, sites for participation across the life span, and the meaning of community experiences in later years were derived from the participants’ testimonies. The participants, seven women interviewed in Jamaica and one man interviewed while he was on vacation in Canada, ranged in age from 70 to 102 years old. The average interv...

Instead, programs are local endeavors. We evaluated programs in Ontario against the Breakfast for Learning Canadian Living Foundation Best Practices standards. Three hundred breakfast and snack programs were randomly selected; 39.4% responded. Data collection included a survey completed by program coordinators and site visits conducted by registered dietitians. Results indicate that programs are meeting some, but not all, of the best practices. Only 54.3% of breakfast and 66.0% of snack programs had paid program coordinators. Resources and strategies need to be developed to help all programs meet best practices.
