Data analysis included medical and work histories, X-ray clinical examination, and the measurement/calculation of ventilatory lung functions VC, FVC, FEV1,FEV1/VC and FEV1/FVC. Of 97 subjects with asbestosis, 30 (31%) were diagnosed parenchymal fibrosis, 33 (34%) pleural fibrosis, and 34 (35%) parenchymal and pleural fibrosis combined. These subgroups did not differ in smoking habit. All subjects with asbestosis showed symptoms of dyspnoea; two thirds showed dyspnoea on exercise and one third at rest as well. In contrast, only one third of controls showed dyspnoea on exercise only. All ventilatory lung functions were lower in subjects with asbestosis than in controls (P < 0.01), except for FEV1/FVC (P > 0.05). Slight, yet clinically significant drops in ventilatory function were observed in subjects with pleural (VC 79.73%; FVC 75.09%; and FEV1 78.52%) and combined asbestosis (VC 78.21%; FVC 75.01%; and FEV1 77.50%), while ventilatory changes in subjects with parenchymal asbestosis were clinically significant only for FVC (79.60%). It was not possible to discriminate between the effects of age and exposure duration in subjects with pleural and combined asbestosis.

The effects of organic dusts on the respiratory system of workers employed in food processing, in... more The effects of organic dusts on the respiratory system of workers employed in food processing, in textile workers, as well as in agricultural and livestock farmers are reported. Deposition and elimination of particles from the lung as well as the possible mechanisms of the organic dust effects on respiratory system are described. Separately are presented results of our investigations on the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and diseases as well as lung function tests as indicators of the condition of the respiratory system. Data on the experimental studies with aqueous extracts of organic dusts on smooth muscle of isolated guinea pig trachea suggest that the bronchoconstrictive effects in humans can be reproduced in nonsensitized guinea pigs. The preventive measures in the development of respiratory impairments in subjects occupationally exposed to organic dusts are described.

Results of mandatory periodic measurements of chemical and physical factors in the work environment in company Aluminij d.d. Mostar were compared. Measurements were taken before the war, in 1988, and following the reconstruction and modernisation of the plant in 2004. Measurements to confirm the presence and concentrations of fluorhydrogen were made at the same workplaces and using the same methods. Test results obtained were expressed as the mean value of three separate measurements. Fluorhydrogen concentrations following the modernisation were compared to those before the modernisation. Results from 1988 show higher fluorhydrogen concentrations at all workplaces. Concentrations of up to 10 times higher than those allowed were recorded in open cells. After the modernisation, the measured concentrati...

To assess the frequency of reported mobbing and the association among mobbing, working environmen... more To assess the frequency of reported mobbing and the association among mobbing, working environment factors, stress, health outcome, personality type, and work ability index in a sample of physicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We conducted a questionnaire survey using a validated self-reported questionnaire among 511 physicians in national health sector of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The questions covered five major categories of mobbing behavior. Characteristics of the work, perceived work environment and its effects, stress, health, and satisfaction with work and life were assessed by the standardized abridged form of Occupational Stress Questionnaire (OSQ). A standardized questionnaire Work Ability Index (WAI) was used to determine the relation between mobbing and work ability. Of 511 surveyed physicians, 387 (76%) physicians self-reported mobbing behavior in the working environment and 136 (26%) was exposed to persistent mobbing. More than a half of the physicians experienced threats...

Repeated exposure to negative or demanding working conditions results in psycho-physiological imbalance which in the long-term results in chronic health problems and the occurrence of presentism and absentism in the workplace. Presentism occurs when employees come to work, but do not work according to a defined work plan, resulting in decreased productivity and reduced quality of work. Absentism is defined as any kind of absence from the workplace. Although presentism and absentism are opposite terms, the negative influence on business achievements is quite similar in both cases. The issue of presentism and absentism in health care is especially important for health care workers, who use health care the same as other beneficiaries of the health care system, but as employees in that same system, they provide health care ...

Particular attention is paid to the degree and the location of pain, as well as functional limitations with respect to demands of the workplace. If the diagnosis is right and therapy and rehabilitation intensive, overuse syndrome usually does not entail long sick leaves. Exceptions are the athletes and certain jobs which require longer periods of rehabilitation. Furthermore, untimely diagnosis and inadequate treatment may extend the period of incapacity. If the therapy and medical rehabilitation cannot completely remedy the functional deficit in performing the regular job, application of pension policy regulations may be necessary. This applies to the immediate danger of disability with the possibility to change the job for a more adequate one, as well as to the disability due to occupational or general incapacity to work. If the health con...

The mean age of the exposed workers was 38 years with the mean exposure of 16 years. Most workers did not smoke while 41% of smokers consumed about 10 cigarettes a day. The data on acute and chronic respiratory symptoms were taken from all workers. Ventilatory capacity was measured by recording maximum expiratory flow-volume (MEFV) curves with readings on forced vital capacity (FVC), one-second forced expiratory volume (FEV1), and maximum expiratory flows at 50% and the last 25% (FEF50, and FEF25, respectively). Textile workers manifested a higher prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms than did the controls, although the differences were statistically significant only for sinusitis, dyspnea, and nasal catarrh (p<0.01). Occupational asthma was found in 3 (0.9%) textile workers. The prevalence of acute symptoms in the exposed workers was particularly high during shift, especially ...

Over the centuries, the relationship between workplace hazards and occupational health care has been influenced by the character of work, social evolution and changes in manufacture, economy and demographics of the working populations. Numerous old civilizations showed deep prejudice towards human work. Very often manual work was done by slaves, and their health and safety were neglected. A spectrum of occupational diseases (acute, chronic, malignant and damage of reproduction) cover all organic body system, each of which can be affected by exposure to specific agents at workplace. Work and working conditions may deteriorate and worsen an existing illness which is not necessarily work-related. Living habits may also interfere with occupational factors leading to the development of a disease. Today, occupational medicine is the only medical...

Ventilatory capacity was measured by recording maximum expiratory flow-volume (MEFV) curves with readings on forced vital capacity (FVC), one-second forced expiratory volume (FEV1), and maximum expiratory flows at 50% and the last 25% (FEF50 and FEF25, respectively). Skin prick test with paper dust allergens, some nonoccupational allergens, and total immunoglobulin IgE analysis were used to assess immunological status. Significantly higher prevalences of all chronic respiratory symptoms were recorded in the exposed workers than in controls. The highest prevalence was recorded for chronic cough (36.6%), followed by chronic phlegm (34.7%), chronic bronchitis (33.7%), sinusitis (31.7%), nasal catarrh (29.7%), and dyspnea (16.8%). Occupational asthma was diagnosed in four paper recycling workers only (4.0%). FEF50 and FEF25 values were significantly ...

The previous research studies done in Croatia show the formality of the process of informed consent which often lacks quality and substance, as well as the poor knowledge of patients' rights. Therefore, the authors sought to elucidate the main issues related to the experience and assess the knowledge of general patient population about informed consent after several years of application of the Act on Protection of Patients' Rights. Methods: A short survey was conducted using an independently created questionnaire on a nationally representative sample of 1023 adult subjects divided into two groups: those who had been or not in a hospital for treatment in the past five years. Results: 60% of respondents had only partial knowledge of patients' rights. The level of knowledge about the informed consent was aver...

However, responsible bodies, while using the word competent, have not defined what is meant by it when referring to trained occupational physicians and other occupational safety experts. The curricula of specialist training within EU is underpinned by general principles, ILO and WHO agreements, and recently, the EASOM recommendations.
