Replicative telomere erosion can be compensated by a telomerase. Average telomeres size decreases with age and associated with aging-related diseases such as cancer and cardio-vascular disease. We previously reported that ASTCOQ02 (an Astragalus extract that contains astragaloside IV and cycloastragenol), a telomerase activator showed benefit in an open prospective study on telomere size and cardiovascular impact in healthy volunteers. Here we performed a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial over 6 months comparing the effect of ASTCOQ02 versus placebo on telomere length (TL) in 40 healthy volunteers (mean age 56.1 ± 6.0 years). Twenty subjects received ASTCOQ02 and 20 received placebo capsules. All 40 subjects completed the study with no adverse side effects reported at 6 months. Subjects taking ASTCOQ02 had significant...

The outburst of this epidemic cannot only be explained by the ageing population and could, in decades to come, severely jeopardize the social security systems. The causes of this pathology are still largely unknown but epidemiological studies have proved the importance of environmental factors, whose effects depend on the presence of disease susceptibility genes. Numerous publications have underlined in particular the influence of toxic factors of chemical or physical kind: metals (mercury, lead, aluminum...), pesticides, electromagnetic waves...

Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954), a physician, immunologist and microbiologist. Together with Emil von Dungern he showed that blood groups are inheritable, and established the terminology of ABO system. He also discovered A 1 and A 2 blood groups, and proved that blood group frequency depends on ethnicity. In the years between the wars, he organized the National Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw. After World War II he was the first in Poland to use the theory of serological conflict and implemented it in clinical practice, saving life of over 200 children. He was also the founder and first director of the Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences. Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954), lekarz, immunolog i mikrobiolog.
