Research paper thumbnail of Concurrent transmission versus time sharing in Gaussian interference channels

2012 IEEE 13th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC), 2012

In practice, time sharing methods such as Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) are often exploited to create orthogonal connections. TDMA schemes however are inflexible and not suitable for decentralized implementation. In this context, approaches based on concurrent transmissions in the same frequency spectrum admitting the interference offer a promising and attractive alternative. Yet their performances deteriorate dramatically if the underlying interference coefficients are relatively large. Assuming a Gaussian Interference Channel (GIC), this paper characterizes the so-called TDMA region which is defined as a set of all interference coefficient matrices for which TDMA outperforms concurrent transmissions. We use the dimensional lifting method to prove the convexity and monotonicity of the TDMA region, which provides some insights into the scheduling design under uncertainty with respect to the interference coefficients. Finally, the analysis is used to develop strategies for resource allocation in STDMA-based wireless networks.

First we prove bounds on the achievable secrecy rate. Then we use these bounds to analyze the scaling of the system in three asymptotic regimes, 1) increasing the number of legitimate users while keeping the number of eavesdroppers and antennas constant, 2) increasing the number of eavesdroppers for a fixed number of legitimate users and antennas, and 3) increasing the number of transmit antennas with a constant number of users. Next, we derive the probability of outage for some special cases. In the last part, the theoretical analysis is justified by simulations.

Instead of perfect secrecy (in the information-theoretic sense), of interest here is a cross-layer approach where only parts of relayed information are protected at the physical layer against eavesdropping at relay nodes. For both decode-and-forward and amplify-and-forward relaying strategies, we present a novel framework for designing secrecy schemes for two-hop relay channels that ensure some predefined level of partial secrecy. The paper is concluded by some numerical simulations to show the interplay between different system parameters such as the the rate, secrecy factor, the number of relays and antennas.
