Topics in chemistry education might include understanding how students learn chemistry, how best to teach chemistry and how to improve learning outcomes by changing teaching methods and appropriate training of chemistry instructors, within many modes, including classroom lecture, demonstrations and laboratory activities (Wiki). Dr. Robert L. Lichter, then-Executive Director of the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, speaking in a plenary session at the 16th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (recent BCCE meetings) 1,2 , posed the question "why do terms like 'chemical educator' even exists in higher education, when there is a perfectly respectable term for this activity, namely, 'chemistry professor.' One criticism of this view is that few professors bring any formal preparation in or background about education to their jobs and so lack any professional perspective on the teaching and learning enterprise, particularly discoveries made about effective teaching and how students learn. (Wiki). Finally, there is an emergent perspective called The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) 2. Although there is debate on how to best define SoTL, one of the primary practices is for mainstream faculty members (organic, inorganic, biochemistry, etc.) to develop a more informed view of their practices, how to carry out research and reflection on their

Through a literature review the study demonstrates the gap for a definition and the lack of entries for the term in references. Drawing upon the data the study yields a strategyoriented facilitative anxiety definition paving the way for relativistic reconsideration of the term indicating the possible directions along which the literature on anxiety may proceed. The following emerged as the most salient facilitative anxiety strategies: (1) positive competition & challenge (2) active participation (3) avoidance of individual-specific DA-triggering thresholds (4) positive reinforcement & encouragement (4) preparedness & practice in advance through sufficient exposure (5) motivation to succeed & willingness (7) teamwor...

It aims to investigate the most salient facilitative factors, students’ views on the integration of facilitative anxiety, and the degree to which facilitative anxiety improves oral performance. Initially, the scene is set for a reconsideration of the relatively-underexplored role of facilitative anxiety, the potential benefits for pedagogical practice and a preliminary background which paves the way for a literature review. The Anxiety Questionnaire (AQ) and the Foreign Language Oral Skills Evaluation Matrix (FLOSEM) were used to measure anxiety and oral performance, respectively and mixed methods were shown to lend themselves well to such investigation. The present study resorted to the qualitative Constant Comparative Method to derive the factors conducive to facilitative anxiety and students’ views on its integration in classroom practice. The experimental des...

In this paper, the computation of the electrical field distribution around AC high-voltage lines ... more In this paper, the computation of the electrical field distribution around AC high-voltage lines is demonstrated. The advantages and disadvantages of two different methods are described to evaluate the electrical field quantity. The first method is a seminumerical method using the laws of electrostatic techniques to simulate the two-dimensional electric field under the high-voltage overhead line. The second method which will be discussed is the finite element method (FEM) using specific boundary conditions to compute the two- dimensional electric field distributions in an efficient way.

These systems have attracted the attention of structure designers due to their high efficiency and performance. The present research introduces an innovative rigid steel node using connecting post-tensioned cables comprising of cables and solid nodes. The system uses the tensile strength of cables and rigidity of the steel node to overcome reactive support and reduce deflection in steel, wooden and concrete beams subsequent to the application of the required eccentricity. In addition, the node has applications specifically designed for strengthening buildings and retrofitting old structures. The stability and general behavior of the design was experimentally tested on a full scale in the laboratory being purposefully compared using finite element methods.

LSP International Journal

Nevertheless, these attempts have largely been hampered by a number of factors associated with the anxietal phenomenon on the one hand, and the lack of comprehensive scales capturing the whole gamut of anxiety on the other. Utilizing two valid, reliable and practical instruments, i.e. the AQ (Anxiety Questionnaire) and FLOSEM, the present paper draws upon the data to arrive at the Oral Language Skills (OLS) equation of best fit for the associated data thus quantifying the long-needed elucidation of the relationship between LLA and OP. Further pedagogical implications of the study are also discussed.

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2011

The influence of a transverse magnetic field on the local heat transfer of an electrically-conduc... more The influence of a transverse magnetic field on the local heat transfer of an electrically-conducting laminar fluid flow with high Prandtl number through a pipe was studied experimentally. Experiments indicated an increase in the local Nusselt number. The coupled set of the equations of motion and the energy equation including the viscous and Joule dissipation terms becomes non-linear and is solved numerically using a finite difference scheme. Favorable comparisons with experimental results confirm the correctness of the numerical results. It is found that the influence of magnetic field can be diminished by reducing the angle between the flow direction and the direction of magnetic field. The wall temperature reduces as the value of Hartmann number increases and the reduction rate of the wall temperature decreases as the value of Hartmann number exceeds a certain value. The average Nusselt number asymptotically approaches its limit as the Hartmann number becomes larger. Also, curve fitting can be employed to derive an equation for the average Nusselt number as a function of the Hartmann number. This equation is similar to the Sieder-Tate equation. It is observed that increasing the Hartmann number has no considerable effect on the thermal boundary layer thickness but decreases the temperature of fluid layers inside the boundary layer.

This logistics flows from materials procurement to distribution activities. Three important factors have to be paid special attention to attain the green environment. In case they are applied in a good manner, the hope of achieving a green environment is increased. These steps are the logical rules and regulations, an effective information system and a developed general conscience of the people. In this paper, these three items are investigated in detail. It has been clearly shown that the top management of every country has the main responsibility in practicing the green environment. These three factors should be applied together and the lack of just one of them will render the process incomplete.
