Research paper thumbnail of Impact of co-channel interference on an underlay cognitive radio network over Nakagami-m fading channels

More precisely, a decode-and-forward (DF) relay protocol for a dual-hop cognitive cooperative network is considered. In this study, the impact of both the primary transmitter and CCI on the secondary system performance are considered. First, an exact expression for the equivalent signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the secondary system is obtained. Then, the corresponding exact and asymptotic cumulative distribution function (CDF) are derived. From this, the exact outage performance for the secondary network is investigated. From the results, it can be inferred that the presence of the CCI and primary network interference severely degrades the system performance. Moreover, a higher value of the shape parameter of the desired channel gives better performance and diversity gain. Finally, the analytically derived results have been supported by providing numerical and Monte Carlo simulations results.

Massive innovation in all aspects of the wireless communication network has been witnessed over t... more Massive innovation in all aspects of the wireless communication network has been witnessed over the last few decades. The demand for data throughput is continuously growing, as such, the current regulations for allocating frequency spectrum are not able to respond to this exponential growth. Cognitive radio (CR), has been proposed as a solution to this problem. One of the possible scenarios of the implementation of CR is underlay cognitive radio. In this thesis the performance of an underlay cognitive radio network (UCRN) in the presence of the co-channel interference (CCI) is assessed. Firstly, the impact of CCI on the dual-hop cooperative UCRN is investigated over Rayleigh fading channels. In order to do this, the exact outage probability (OP), average error probability (AEP) and the ergodic capacity (EC) are studied. In addition, simple and asymptotic expressions for the OP and AEP are derived. Furthermore, the optimal power allocation is investigated to enhance the network perfo...

Research paper thumbnail of Optimal transmit power configuration for soft frequency reuse in irregular cellular networks

Optimal configuration of base station (BS) parameters is a key requirement in current cellular ne... more Optimal configuration of base station (BS) parameters is a key requirement in current cellular networks. For acceptable user (UE) performance, the bandwidth and transmit power parameters of each BS need to be intelligently chosen. Soft frequency reuse (SFR) is a resource allocation algorithm that specifies efficient frequency and power distribution for different locations within a BS. By classifying UEs into two regions based on their signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), SFR adjusts BS parameters to cater for the most vulnerable UEs. However, since typical cellular networks consist of irregular BS placements and varying UE distribution, more dynamic SFR models and schemes need to be developed. In this paper, we present an SFR implementation that provides optimal choices for macro BS transmit power in the different network regions. We show how edge UEs exposed to high levels of inter-cell interference (ICI) can be compensated based on a fairness index. The algorithm is wel...

The derived expressions are used to measure the asymptotic outage probability of the system. Numerical results and Matlab simulations are also provided to sustain the correctness of the analytical calculations.

Therefore, OCR systems are being developed for all languages, and Kurdish is no exception. Kurdish is one of the languages that present special challenges to OCR. The main challenge of Kurdish is that it is mostly cursive. Therefore, a segmentation process must be able to specify the beginning and end of the characters. This step is important for character recognition. This paper presents an algorithm for Kurdish character segmentation. The proposed algorithm uses the projection-based approach concepts to separate lines, words, and characters. The algorithm works through the vertical projection of a word and then identifies the splitting areas of the word characters. Then, a post-processing stage is used to handle the over-segmentation problems that occur in the initial segmentation stage. The proposed method is tested using a data set cons...

The proposed strategy is based on the fact that the quality of service for the GBU can be strictly guaranteed if its instantaneous data rate is larger than the target date rate. Compared to existing works, the derived analytical results for the proposed APA strategy in uplink NOMA-SGF networks show that the outage probability at a low signal-to-noise ratio for the GBU can be significantly reduced, and full diversity gain for the GFUs can be achieved. Finally, the accuracy of the theoretical results is validated using Monte Carlo simulations.

Research paper thumbnail of Primary receiver-aware opportunistic broadcasting in cognitive radio ad hoc networks

2016 Eighth International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN), 2016

Broadcasting is an important operation in wireless networks, as well as in cognitive radio (CR) n... more Broadcasting is an important operation in wireless networks, as well as in cognitive radio (CR) networks. The operation of most network protocols in ad hoc networks depends on broadcasting control information among nodes. In traditional ad hoc networks, due to uniform channel availability, broadcasting is easily implemented as all nodes can be tuned to a single common channel. However, broadcast in cognitive radio ad hoc networks is a much more challenging task. The complexity emerges from the fact that harmful interference with the transmissions of primary users (PUs) must be avoided. In this paper, we propose a fully-distributed broadcast protocol for cognitive radio ad hoc networks that alleviates the interference collision risk to the PU communications, explicitly protect primary receivers that are not detected during spectrum sensing and provides a high successful broadcast ratio. Furthermore, we consider practical scenarios in our design where no global network topology is known or no common control channel is assumed to exist. A key novelty of this work is the formulation of the broadcast issue from the viewpoint of protecting PU-receivers, which is a distinctive feature in CR networks.
