These properties can lead to longterm usage of these substances. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Cuminum cyminum fruit essential oil (FEO) on the acquisition and expression of morphine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in mice. CPP was induced by subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of morphine (5 mg/kg) in 3 days conditioning schedule. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of Cumin FEO (0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1% and 2%; 5 ml/kg) or Tween-80 (0.5%; 5 ml/kg) did not show any conditioning effects. Administration of Cumin FEO (0.001-2%; 5 ml/kg; i.p.), 60 min before test on day 5 (expression) decreased the conditioning scores at the doses of 1% and 2% while i.p. injection of Cumin FEO (0.001-2%; 5 ml/kg), 60 min before morphine injection (5 mg/kg; s.c.) during 3 days of conditioning session (acquisition) significantly resulted in decrement of rewarding properties of morphine at the doses of 0.1%, 0.5%, 1% and 2% in dose-dependent manner. Tween-80 as a vehicle did not suppress the acquisition and expression of morphine-induced CPP. The results showed that the C. cyminum fruit essential oil reduces the acquisition and expression of morphine-induced conditioned place preference in mice.

Animals received different doses of morphine 5 days after surgical cannulation in the lateral ventricle. Subcutaneous injections of morphine (2-5 mg/kg) in mouse produced place preference in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, both intraperitoneal (0.0006-0.1 mg/kg) and intracerebroventricular (0.007-25 ng) nicotine administration significantly reduced the expression of morphine-induced place preference, in a dose-dependent manner. Nicotine, however, was effective over narrow ultra-low dose ranges (0.0012, 0.0025, 0.005 and 0.01 mg/kg; intraperitoneal) and (0.03, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.6 ng/mouse; intracerebroventricular). In addition, locomotor activity was reduced when higher doses of nicotine [both intraperitoneal (0.02, 0.03 and 0.1 mg/kg) and intracerebroventricular (10 and 24 ng/mouse)] were used. Nicotine alone, however, did not cause motivational effects. Intracerebroventricular injection of hexamethonium (0.03, 0.1 and 0.3 mug/mouse; 10 min before nicotine) diminished the effects of nicotine on morphine-induced conditioned place preference. This effect could neither be obtained by intraperitoneal administration of hexamethonium (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg; 30 min before nicotine), nor be reproduced after either intracerebroventricular or intraperitoneal injection of atropine (a muscarinic receptor antagonist). The antagonists, themselves, did not show any motivational effects when used alone and were unable to affect the expression of morphine-induced conditioned place preference. It appears that ultra-low doses of nicotine can reduce the expression of morphine-induced place preference, and that central nicotinic acetylcholine receptors play a role in this regard.

Hence, preparation of effective approaches for reduction of anxiety is an issue of importance. Accordingly, this study was performed to determine the efficacy of group obstetric consultation on anxiety control in pregnant women in non-severe cases. In this randomized clinical trial, 90 pregnant women attending to a Health Care Center in Tehran, Iran from April 2010 to March 2012 with first pregnancy aging from 18 to 35 years and gestational age of eight to eighteen weeks were evaluated. They were randomly assigned into consultation and control groups. The consultation group was designed according to the different needs of pregnancy for five sessions in five weeks (each session 60 to 90 minutes) and the control group only received routine perinatal care. There was statistically significant difference between after-intervention scores in anxiety state (P=0.014); but the anxiety trait showed no difference (P=0.19). Also the changes in trait anxiety scores was more in consultation group compared with control group (P=0.002) that was also seen for anxiety state scores (P=0.0001). Totally, it may be concluded that group consultation is effective in reduction of state and trait anxiety in pregnant women with non-severe non-pathological cases of anxiety.

Objective: In this study, the effects of Cuminum cyminum FEO on acquisition and expression of morphine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in morphinesensitized mice were studied. Methods: Repeated subcutaneous (s.c.) administration of morphine (5 mg/kg), once daily for three and 5 days free of the opioid (sensitization period), increased conditioning response induced by ineffective doses of morphine (0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 mg/kg). Results: The results showed that intra-peritoneal (i.p.) injection of Cumin FEO (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2%; 5 ml/kg) or Tween-80 (0.5%; 5 ml/kg), 60 min before administration of morphine or saline during sensitization period (acquisition), decreased the conditioning response induced by ineffective dose of morphine (0.5 mg/kg; s.c.) at the doses of 1% (P<0.05) and 2% (P<0.001) while Cumin FEO (0.001-2%; i.p.), just 60 min before the test on post-conditioning phase (expression experiments), did not alter the conditioning scores in morphine-and non-sensitized mice.
