Systemic racism exacerbates the adverse impacts of social determinants of health, causing health ... more Systemic racism exacerbates the adverse impacts of social determinants of health, causing health disparities for African Americans. The COVID-19 pandemic's effect on communities of color has provided more attention and respect to African Americans' need for mental health care. This conceptual article explores COVID-19 and systemic racism disproportionately affecting African Americans' mental health and psychological well-being. The article also provides recommendations for counselor educators and mental health professionals to combat the problem.

Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional exchanges that communicate hostile, derogatory,... more Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional exchanges that communicate hostile, derogatory, negative slights and insults to people of colour. Microaggressions are prevalent on college campuses across the United States. This article explores the impact of microaggressions on minority male graduate students in counsellor education programs. The article further discusses how institutions and counsellor education programs must address racial stereotypes through cultural competency training and hiring diverse faculty and staff. A quantitative design was employed to understand minority males’ perceptions of microaggressions. The sample of the study consisted of (n=99) participants comprised of Asian (n=30), Hispanic (n=33), and Black (n=36) male degree recipients from counsellor education programs. The data were collected using the Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale (REMS) while a one-way ANOVA was used to examine the impact of microaggressions. The study revealed a difference...

The campus environment can be challenging for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or queer (LGBTQ) stu... more The campus environment can be challenging for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or queer (LGBTQ) students still developing their sexual identity. Being a Black gay or bisexual male can add another layer of isolation in their university setting. The campus climate for Black gay and bisexual males lack social support and does address their experience and needs. Additionally, Black gay and bisexual males attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) feel unsupported by the lack of LGBTQ resources on campus. The conceptual article aims to explore issues impacting Black gay and bisexual males in university settings. This article provides an overview of student identity development, the impact of the African American community, discrimination and hate crimes, the campus climate, the HBCU setting, mentoring impact, and counselor educators’ support with this student population.

Racial microaggressions are subtle and covert language that communicates a negative perception of... more Racial microaggressions are subtle and covert language that communicates a negative perception of people of color. The study investigated the perceived racial microaggressions of Asian, Hispanic, and Black males in graduate counseling programs. Participants (n= 99) completed the Racial Ethnic Microaggression Scale. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference in the perceptions of microaggressions between Asian, Hispanic, and Black males.

African American males are less likely to engage in mental health services. Racial discriminatio... more African American males are less likely to engage in mental health services. Racial discrimination, cultural mistrust, mental health disparities, and racial identity roles are significant factors impeding African American men from pursuing or continuing counseling. Unfortunately, counselors subliminally acknowledge the stereotypical labels ascribed to African American males lead to a poor or non-existing rapport, and tend to create solutions for the clients, disregarding their intrinsic motivation and autonomy. This conceptual article discussed racial discrimination, microaggression, and community ties as the barriers to counseling engagement among African American males. The article also highlighted the history of counseling African American males and the present urgency for a culturally sensitive model using the concepts of Motivational Interviewing for encouraging counseling engagement and autonomous resolution of ambivalence.
