The presented method can be used in measuring systems where it is important to obtain in real time the values of amplitude, frequency, initial phase and damping coefficient of a single sinusoidal component of an analysed signal. The paper presents optimized, in terms of the number of mathematical operations, implementation of the method in selected embedded devices as well as the calculation times of the method for each platform.

Research paper thumbnail of Initial study on quantitative electroencephalographic analysis of bioelectrical activity of the brain of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) without epilepsy

Scientific Reports

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are spectrum of neurodevelopmental conditions associated ... more Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are spectrum of neurodevelopmental conditions associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. The FASD manifests mostly with facial dysmorphism, prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, and selected birth defects (including central nervous system defects). Unrecognized and untreated FASD leads to severe disability in adulthood. The diagnosis of FASD is based on clinical criteria and neither biomarkers nor imaging tests can be used in order to confirm the diagnosis. The quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) is a type of EEG analysis, which involves the use of mathematical algorithms, and which has brought new possibilities of EEG signal evaluation, among the other things—the analysis of a specific frequency band. The main objective of this study was to identify characteristic patterns in QEEG among individuals affected with FASD. This study was of a pilot prospective study character with experimental group consisting of patients with newly di...

As many patients suffer from the drug-resistant version, the number of potential treatment methods is very small. However, since not only the treatment of epilepsy, but also its proper diagnosis or observation of brain signals from recordings are important research areas, in this paper, we address this very problem by developing a reliable technique for removing spikes and sharp transients from the baseline of the brain signal using a morphological filter. This allows much more precise identification of the so-called epileptic zone, which can then be resected, which is one of the methods of epilepsy treatment. We used eight patients with 5 KHz data set and depended upon the Staba 2002 algorithm as a reference to detect the ripples. We found that the average sensitivity and false detection rate of our technique are significant, and they are ∼94% and ∼14%, respecti...

In this paper, the authors carried out some research where they implemented various smoothing filters to enable identification of the bioimpedance spectroscopy parameters. The proposed filtering methods may also be used for application on embedded systems, which have smaller computing power but have become recently very popular. The obtained results with the implementation of smoothing filters were promising, however, some of the obtained results were unsatisfactory. This work also contains a brief introduction to bioimpedance spectroscopy and smoothing filters.

Methods The obtained data was filtered. For the study purposes various smoothing filters were tested, including Median and Savitzky–Golay Filters; however, median filter only was applied. Implementation of this filter made the obtained data more legible and useful for potential diagnostics purposes. The tests were carried out with the implementation of the Emotiv Flex EEG headset. Results The obtained results were promising and complied with the initial assumptions, which stated that the “relax”-phase, despite relaxing sounds stimuli, is strongly affected with the “focus”-phase with distracting sounds, which is clearly visible in the shape of the recorded EEG data. Conclusions Further investigations with broader range of subjects is being currently carried out in order to confirm the already obtained re...

Research paper thumbnail of Data compression using Prony's method and wavelet transform in power quality monitoring systems

Described algorithm offers high compression ratio and keeps good accuracy of the reconstructed signals. The algorithm uses a modified Prony’s method for initial power waveform modeling (basic parameters of estimation) as well as wavelet transform for additional reduction of compression artifacts present in the Prony model of the analysed signal. The combination of the Prony’s method and wavelet transform enables obtaining effective compression of real signals observed in monitoring systems. It also gives information about harmonics and transient oscillatory components of power waveforms that can be used for the power quality analysis. Examples of real signals recorded in power monitoring systems are presented in the paper as well as discussion of compression efficiency for different sets of compression artefacts level.

In this particular case it was applied for the purpose of efficiency assessment of smoothing filtering. The analysed data recorded with the NeuroSky Mindwave EEG headset, obtained from the open source data-base. The best results gave Moving Average filtering with the score of over 96% peaks coverage. Promising results of this methods are consistent with the conclusions based on visual assessment. This method can be treated as an introductory method for intelligent machine-based reasoning.

Modifications of the Prony algorithm broaden the scope of method application. Modification of the filter of known components enables more accurate analysis of the parameters of unknown components and components with known or assumed frequencies. This article presents a comparison of the results of analyses conducted with the proposed algorithm for simulated and real signals and the results obtained by means of a commercial electric power quality testing device, operating in class A and using the Fourier transform. The proposed method enables to estimate the levels of the harmonic components, the frequency of the fundamental signal and real parameters of the interharmonic components, which are grouped and averaged in the contemporary monitoring equipment. Knowledge of the individual parameters of the interharmonics has considerable diagnostic importance while re...

It also describes the possibility of using signal precorrection which improves the parasitic harmonics in the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of the amplified signal by correcting linearity of the tested amplifier’s transfer function. The proposed method of analyzing and presenting the transfer function allows to diagnose the causes of generating parasitic harmonics, what makes it a useful tool when designing low distortion amplifier systems, such as e.g. amplifiers in measurement systems. The presented THD correction can be used in e.g. amplifier systems that cooperate with arbitrary generators.
