As an economist and researcher for the Center for Community and Business Research (CCBR), he has been the lead investigator for several economic contribution/impact studies. An example of this work is research on the impacts of the Eagle Ford Shale (February 2011, May 2012, March 2013, September 2014). Oil and gas activities have had important impacts in the South-Central Texas area and the border with Mexico.He has contributed to peer-reviewed publications. The most recent paper is titled “Hospitality sector revenues and employment in the Eagle Ford Shale, 2010-2019,” and is published in the Journal of Hospitality Financial Management. The San Antonio Medical Foundation contacted the Center for Community and Business Research (CCBR... more The San Antonio Medical Foundation contacted the Center for Community and Business Research (CCBR) earlier this year to estimate the economic impact of the South Texas Medical Center area.
“The South Texas Medical Center generated almost 12billioninrevenuein2022,accordingtoaneweconomicimpactstudy,andsupportedmorethan86,000jobsthatpaid12 billion in revenue in 2022, according to a new economic impact study, and supported more than 86,000 jobs that paid 12billioninrevenuein2022,accordingtoaneweconomicimpactstudy,andsupportedmorethan86,000jobsthatpaid5 billion in wages.
That’s a 36% increase in overall impact compared to 2018, the last time the San Antonio Medical Foundation commissioned an economic impact study of the center.
Released earlier this month, the study was performed by the Center for Community and Business Research at UTSA’s Institute for Economic Development, based on data from 2022.”
Working with Matthew Jackson and receiving data from the SBDC National Information Clearinghouse, I also collected information from other sources like the University Hospital, UT Health San Antonio, City of San Antonio, San Antonio Business Journal, among others, and using the IMPLAN database, which summarizes data from several federal and state agencies.

El estudio tiene como objetivo estimar los impactos economicos de algunos aspectos de la Reforma ... more El estudio tiene como objetivo estimar los impactos economicos de algunos aspectos de la Reforma Energetica de 2013 en el Noreste de Mexico, particularmente los relacionados con los recursos de gas de esquisto (lutitas) o de “shale gas”. En especifico, el reporte presenta estimaciones preliminares de los efectos de los nuevos proyectos de construccion y operacion de gasoductos en la region Noreste. Para medir dichos impactos se construyeron matrices insumo-producto y de contabilidad social regionales. Para ello, se partio de las matrices nacionales del Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia para el ano 2012. Al analisis tradicional de insumo-producto se le ha anadido informacion de cuentas sociales que presentan las transacciones no solo entre sectores industriales sino que ademas incluyen a instituciones como los hogares, las sociedades y los trabajadores por cuenta propia.

By taking advantage of proprietary data from input- output tables’ time series and by using econo... more By taking advantage of proprietary data from input- output tables’ time series and by using econometric methods, this study estimated job and output multipliers affecting the hospitality sector in Eagle Ford Shale (EFS) between 2010 and 2019. In 2019, in the EFS area, the hospitality sector, including the hotel and food subsectors, received 32.5% of its increased revenues from oil and gas activities when comparing the years 2019 and 2010. For each new job in the energy industry, the hospitality sector received between 10,185and10,185 and 10,185and12,744. In the same year, hotel subsector revenues due to oil and gas activities explained 78.7% of its increased revenues when comparing the years 2019 and 2010. With each job created in the energy industry, the hotel subsector received between 4,828and4,828 and 4,828and5,398.
