Locke’s religious concerns and interests pervade virtually all areas of his production. Not only ... more Locke’s religious concerns and interests pervade virtually all areas of his production. Not only his public as well as private writings on religion, but also his major works on philosophy and politics, including An Essay concerning Human Understanding and Two Treatises of Government, denote his preoccupation with theological and soteriological matters, which conditioned his philosophical, moral, and political inquiries. In these and other books, Locke frequently referred to Scripture in order to strengthen or even ground his arguments concerning several issues, such as the necessity to have recourse to divine revelation where unassisted reason does not reach, the existence of angels and other spiritual beings, and the theological foundation of natural law. Locke’s reading of the Christian Scriptures actually played a central role in shaping his mentality and ideas. Book Reviews JOSEPH NEEDHAM, Moulds of understanding. A pattern of natural philosophy, edited by ... more Book Reviews JOSEPH NEEDHAM, Moulds of understanding. A pattern of natural philosophy, edited by Gary Werskey, London, Allen & Unwin, 1976, 8vo, pp. 320, £7.75. Eleven essays on political and philosophical topics have been gathered together in order to illustrate Needham's social vision. He is well known for his remarkable Science and civilization in China which is still evolving, but preceding it and permeating it is a world view which is more difficult to appreciate because his many publications are not now easy to acquire. Nine of the eleven here have appeared in previous books and they have been reproduced faithfully, with only minor editing. The editor introduces both the selection and Needham; in addition, at least two of the essays are of autobiographic value. One of Needham's messages concerns the dangers of allowing a world view of science to dominate society, one that he has been preaching for decades. He examines here the relationships between science, religion and politics and, in addition, the nature of applied science and technology in capitalistic society. He is one of the few individuals today who can do this adequately, owing to his deep knowledge and insight into Eastern as well as Western civilization. His central beliefs are that all important forms of human experience are fundamentally valid even though at times contradictory ("the moulds of understanding"), that there is a continuity between cosmic, inorganic, biological, human and social evolutions, and that a cosmic process underlies the moulds of understanding. His vision is ecumenical, his outlook is progressive and his message is timely. His book can be recommended to all those who view modern science as a potentially destructive force. Cette these, que l'on trouve dans les pensees de type reductionniste et/ou empiriste (cf. Hume mais aussi Berkeley et Locke), se trouve aussi, de facon apparemment etonnante, chez Spinoza. L'etude de la croyance dans la pensee classique est une occasion de se demander si les empiristes n'ont pas utilise Spinoza plus qu'ils n'ont ose le dire.

Sous cet eclairage, les analyses de la connaissance speculative deviennent des modeles pour la constitution d'un savoir probable, qui n'atteint que l'assurance, et ce par l'approximation d'hypotheses eparses lointainement calquees sur le modele de la composition du savoir certain. Le naturel revet ainsi la forme d'une genese typique racontee, au lieu de l'imposition d'un fondement statique et immediat ; la naturel est artificiellement constitue par la raison, puis projete aux origines, afin d'expliquer, de critiquer ou de justifier l'actuel. Locke’s hermeneutics is not a particular instance of the general method exposed in the Essay conc... more Locke’s hermeneutics is not a particular instance of the general method exposed in the Essay concerning Human Understanding; such a deductive process would be contradictory to Locke’s very method. The Essay does not elaborate a general method applied afterwards in various fields, but analyses existing sciences and beliefs in order to improve them: it is a critique of previous learning more than a Discours de la Methode. In order to be coherent with the epistemology of the Essay, it is necessary to start anew with every field of learning, considering its singularity and trying to correct wrong conceptions.
