Research paper thumbnail of Example of an organic reaction in a Langmuir film : reduction of an amphiphilic keton by NaBH4

Changes in the compression isotherm and in the monolayer morphology were observed when the concentration of NaBH4 or the delay between spreading and compression was increased. These modifications were specific to NaBH4 and suggested that a chemical reaction is taking place along the monolayer. Modifications in the IR spectrum of the corresponding Langmuir-Blodgett film confirmed the reduction of the ketone group of 1 when spread on aqueous subphases of sodium borohydride. Analysis of the compression isotherms demonstrated that this reaction occurred for all surface pressures and therefore indicated that the ketone group of 1 is accessible to the borohydride whatever the compression state of the monolayer.

ABSTRACT A novel approach to the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers via covalent or non-... more ABSTRACT A novel approach to the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers via covalent or non-covalent linkages was studied. It relies on the use of thermotropic side-chain liquid-crystal polymer networks. The polysiloxane networks obtained after extraction of the template preserved the mesomorphic organisation set up in the presence of the guest molecule. Batch rebinding analysis were performed: this study revealed that the imprinted polymer has a much greater affinity for the template molecule than the unimprinted one, and a significant selectivity.

The imprinted materials remained mesomorphous even with high amounts of template. The liquid crystalline character increased and avoided high cross-linking densities. Molecular imprinting was a valuable polymerization method for preparing synthetic materials able to exhibit the molecular recognition phenomenon.

The authors detail the advantageous properties of these LCs including optical anisotropic, transparency and easy control over structure. This interdisciplinary work includes valuable input from international projects with special focus on the use of liquid crystalline polymers and/or nanocomposites.

Journal of Physical Chemistry A, Nov 1, 2006

Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) experiments have been performed at various temperatures on both sides of the cholesteric-isotropic transition. Liquid crystalline order provides significant enhancement to the strength of interaction, inducing a discontinuous jump in concentration of the complex at the cholesteric-isotropic transition.

The template was first linked to some functionalised groups of the polymer via hydrogen-bound interactions, then was removed by washing. The sample was macroscopically oriented during the synthesis; so, both a molecular chirality and a supramolecular phase chirality were topologically imprinted inside the network. Batch rebinding experiments, performed in the presence of the template or of the other enantiomer, showed that the imprinted polymer has a pronounced stereo-selectivity towards the template enantiomer. The rebinding capacity appeared to be greater than an unimprinted mesogenic network as well as than an imprinted non mesogenic one.

The controlled polymerization of VDF could be successfully mediated by a xanthate chain transfer agent as evidenced by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), 19 F NMR, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. Copolymers of VDF and perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) of varying controlled chain lengths were also obtained. Finally, the direct synthesis of main-chain fluorinated amphiphilic block copolymers was performed from hydrophilic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) macro-RAFT agents. It is expected that this finding will open interesting perspectives for the development of new class of polymeric surfactants for the stabilization of emulsions based on water and supercritical carbon dioxide media.

It is shown that the radius of gyration increases by about twofold when the mesogengraft amount increases from 0 to 100%, which suggests that the persistence length of the backbone increases by about 4-fold. Comparison with the results reported in the literature on the melt state suggests that the persistence length is not an intrinsic property of side chain liquid crystal polymers, but depends on inter-chain interactions.
