Counselors, when discussing the use of computers in their work, will invariably turn to the quest... more Counselors, when discussing the use of computers in their work, will invariably turn to the question, &dquo;What do we need to know to be able to use computers effectively in career guidance and other areas of counseling?&dquo; The answers are almost as varied as the number of people discussing the question. At one extreme, there is a group of counselor computer users who fervently believe that programming skills using language such as BASIC, LOGO, or PASCAL are essential for anything more than superficial use of computers in counseling. In their view, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and counselors who &dquo;play&dquo; at using computers in career counseling are likely to use them without the basic understanding and expertise they need to be thoughtful 1 and discriminating users. At the other extreme are counselors who feel that the computer is simply a tool that can take some of the drudgery and routine out of counseling, thus

The individual chapters were selected to focus on what leads to counselor efficacy, defined as the effectiveness of the counselor in bringing about counselor-and/or client-desired outcomes relating to the client. Each chapter includes a thorough review of the relevant literature and offers a summary of generalizations to be drawn from the area reviewed, as well as personal insights as to the implications of the review for counseling education, programs, and practices.
