Boreal Env. Res. 17: 277–290. Using readily available geospatial data and statistical analyses we constructed models to predict mercury concentrations in northern pikes (Esox lucius) and walleyes (Stizostedion vitreum) in lakes frequently used by sport fishers, urban anglers and subsistance fish-ers in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region (Canada). Mercury concentrations in northern pikes were predicted with 74% accuracy using three variables: lake order, fraction of the lake watershed with gentle to moderate slopes (steepness 2%–6%) and the fraction of the watershed with mature forest cover. To construct the walleye model, we divided lakes into 3 categories: (1) lakes with mines or mine tailings located less than 1 km away from the shore; (2) lakes located on the Lake Ojibway-Ba...

Land use, because of its impact on mercury inputs, has been highlighted as a key player in the sources and eventual concentrations of the heavy metal. In order to evaluate the impact of watershed disturbances on Hg dynamics in frequently fished, large boreal lakes, we studied sediment cores retrieved at the focal point of eight large lakes of Qubec (Canada), six with watersheds affected by land uses such as logging and/or mining, and two with pristine watersheds, considered as reference lakes. Using a Geographical Information System (GIS), we correlated the recent evolution of land uses (e.g., logging and mining activities) and morphological characteristics of the watershed (e.g., mean slope of the drainage area, vegetation cover) to total Hg concentrations (THg) in sedimentary records. In each core, THg gradually increased ov...

The three sites from upstream to downstream, named the Yanjiaozhai site, the Matou site and the Bengfang site were located. Total mercury (THg) in porewater was analyzed respectively by BrC1 oxidation, SnC12 reduction, gold trap collection and CVAFS. MeHg in sediment samples was analyzed by CH2C12 extraction, NaBEt4 ethylation, Tenax trap collection and GC-CVAFS. The same methods were applied for MeHg in porewater except CH2C12 pretreatment. MeHg content in sediment samples varied between 0.6 ng/g and 27.5 ng/g. THg and MeHg concentrations in porewater samples were 6.1-5863.9 ng/L and 0.67-16.27 ng/L, respectively.
