In this review, we have recognized the requirements for the use of this tool in the fields of plant science and especially where measurements must be rapid, cheap and easy to access wherever we go. This new microscope doesn’t require any special labels and could help increase access to low-cost plant science diagnostic testing tool and would be beneficial in developing parts of the world where there is meagre access to agricultural science lab and few high-tech diagnostic facilities. Moreover, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed to provide recommendations for further research in plant sciences.

The extent of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance with respect to fruit morphology (i.e. fruit width, fruit length, fresh weight of fruit, fresh weight of rind, fresh seed weight with pulp and fresh seed weight without pulp and quality traits (i.e TSS, total sugar, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, acidity and ascorbic acid) in the fruits of fifteen wild pomegranate genotypes from Tatool, Narag and Daro Deohria were studied. Fruit width, length, fresh weight of fruit, fresh weight of rind, TSS, total sugar, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and ascorbic acid were recorded with high heritability. Thus, selection of progenies based on performance would be effective for these characters. All the parameters were positively and significantly correlated with each parameter. Fresh weight of seed with aril had highly significant and positive correlation with fruit width, fruit length, total sugar and reducing sugar. Therefore, emphasis should be given to these characters while selecting a genotype for enhancing yield and fruit size in pomegranate. On the basis of desirable parameters, best individuals will be selected and tree improvement programme can be taken up for further studies. Use of quality seeds alone can enhance the crop productivity by 15–25 per cent. Considering the importance of quality seeds of rice, KVK, Bishnupur, Manipur conducted frontline demonstrations (FLDs) through participatory seed production of rice var RC-Maniphou-13 in kharif season at adopted farmers’ fields in Leimaram village, district Bishnupur, Manipur during 2017–18. The study was carried out to demonstrate the production and economic benefit of adopting improved technologies through line transplanting at 25 x 10 cm spacing in the fields of 20 adopted farmers’ fields covering an area of 10 ha. Impact assessment recorded higher yield as well as higher economic return as compared to the farmers’ local practices. The demonstration of technologies gave higher yield of 58 q/ha with 15.51 per cent increase in average yield over farmers’ local practices. The study also registered higher gross return, net return with higher benefit-cost ratio in the demonstration fields as compared to farmers’ local practices.

The present studies on various facets of reproductive biology were conducted under the Dept. of Tree Improvement and Genetic Resources during 2011 in which three sites namely Jaunaji, Dharja and Kandaghat with elevations 1400 m, 1215 m and 1180 m respectively in district Solan. The studies included full coverage of phenophases as a physiological basis of reproductive growth. The phenological studies included the morphological characters such as leafing, flowering and fruiting in which leaf bud appearance was first observed in L 2 (Dharja) followed by L 1 (Jaunaji) and L 3 (Kandaghat). Fruit development at first instance was recorded in L 1 (Jaunaji), L 2 (Dharja) and the lastly from L 3 (Kandaghat). The floral morphology was also one of the parameter in which the type of inflorescence was observed to be consisting of numerous flowers born in thyrse bearing paniculate racemes at the apex of the branchlets bearing compound leaves. The flowers are functionally unisexual but morphologically bisexual. Calyx is polysepalous. Corolla was found to have five equal sized petals which were longer than the calyx and adnate near the base. Anthesis of flowers was observed to take place between 7.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. for all the three localities. The mode of pollination was observed to be both cross and self pollination but tends to be out crossed. The pollen grains exhibited a light creamish colour. Pollinators were found to be thrips and bees. Reproductive biology, phenological studies, Toona ciliata

Pomegranate is considered as a monoecious species developing male and perfect flowers (hermaphrodite) and being self and cross pollinated. As the cytological understanding of a species is useful in planning breeding programmes. Success of tree improvement generally depends upon the combination and expression of characters in the new genotypes which holds the key for boosting the productivity and yield of the economic product. In this context, regulation of variation through reproductive system forms the basic approach which is dependent upon the information pertaining to reproductive biology as the biological process. Therefore, the studies on reproductive biology and breeding system are pre-requisite for developing appropriate strategies for tree breeding.

Plants which have higher index value are tolerant to air pollution and can be used as sink to mitigate pollution, while plants with low index value show less tolerance and can be used to indicate levels of air pollution. Plants play an important role in monitoring and maintaining the ecological balance by actively participating in the cycling of nutrients and gases like carbon dioxide, oxygen and also provide enormous leaf area for impingement, absorption and accumulation of air pollutants to reduce the pollution level in the environment. The tolerant species of plants function as pollution “sink” and therefore a number of environmental benefits can be desired by planting tolerant species in polluted areas. For this purpose, evaluation of plants with respect to their tolerance level to air pollution may be essential.

The half sibs from Narag and Daron location performed best for seedling height, minimal fruit borer incidence and oval shape. The highest titratable acidity was recorded from genotype L 3 T 3 (Daron location) with elliptical shape which is beneficial for Anardana processing. The tree genotypes bearing ovate and elliptical shaped fruits can be preferred for better fruit size selection. High heritability followed by genetic advance was observed for percent germination and seedling at six month age. In cross L 2 T 2 X L 3 T 3 , reputed fresh weight of seed without aril and germination was better whereas L 1 T 1 X L 2 T 1 cross showed better fruit quality biochemical estimates. The fruit crosses viz. L 2 T 4 X L 2 T 1 and L 2 T 2 X L 2 T 1 were found to have lower incidences of the borer attack. Maximum value in fruit traits were obtained from open pollination as compared to controlled cross combination for all the characters except fruit weight and fresh seed weight with aril. The hybrids were tested for their paternity using 21 RAPD markers of which thirteen primers revealed that 7 hybrids out of 15 hybrids have similar pattern as their parent.
