Research paper thumbnail of Communal Religious Education in a Multicultural Indonesian Church

Indonesian Journal of Theology (e-journal), Dec 31, 2020

This contextual plurality is the church's wealth, which should make an essential contribution to its ministry. However, a singular challenge that arises in light of that diversity relates to the strong emphasis on "church unity"-which should be a supportive element-thus contributing to problems with the church's ministry and pedagogy. How is this so? Given that centralized efforts to promote unity correlate closely with the imposition of rules that dominate and determine Christian religious education in the church, this article asserts the necessity of communal identity for an ongoingly diverse reality; communal identity, in other words, must not be destroyed in the name of promoting unity. The argument unfolds in three stages, entailing (1) a summary of the current context of the GPIB and problems it faces, (2) an academic study of the objectives of Christian religious education, to be considered in the context of the GPIB, and (3) a rationale for setting these objectives. Through these three stages, the communal vision is expected to contribute to the church's ministry and education in the midst of the congregation and the whole Indonesian society with its multicultural context.

Deradicalization is seen as an effort that can be taken to overcome this problem. This paper presents the realization of this strategy from Christian Education's perspective. A qualitative approach through analysis of written materials in literature study is presented in this paper. In particular, the research results from the discourse analysis study of news papers that have been carried out previously are used along with some supporting works of literature to complement the required analysis data. Jack L. Seymour's ideas about the importance of a holistic approach in Christian Education, including a faith community approach, instructional and missional, are the theoretical basis in this paper. These three approaches are correlated with the concept of public theology. As a result, Christian education for encouraging people in the public sphere has become a transformational approach to present the benefits of faith education in the public sphere, primarily to support the deradicalization process.

After identifying several problems that hamper the Indonesian Church in developing a koinonia community, the writer explores the concept of koinonia among Indonesian churches and to give solutions to the problems. The exploration of koinonia builds understanding to propose a model for Christian religious educational ministry for the Indonesian Churches with its religious pluralistic context. This model also can give a positive contribution to the Indonesian pluralistic society and its educational system as the context of the Church.

The study showed that violence against women is also the result of deep and troubling cultural structures that oppress women. Based on a see–judge–act analysis, this article proposes that church educational ministries can build relationships with women victims and their families through a variety of transformational ways, even amid a pandemic. The church can develop communication, healing, and education through a holistic approach in Christian education (practicing communicability, redeemability, and educability). The paradigm of gender equality should be integrated into our attitudes and actions in daily life and in the whole range of the church’s ministry to create spaces for women’s voices not only through education and ritual action but also actual transformation.
