This study compares the metadiscourse (i.e. the meanings which relate to the writers and readers ... more This study compares the metadiscourse (i.e. the meanings which relate to the writers and readers of a text) in two samples of English and Swedish non-fiction texts and their translations in the English Swedish Parallel Corpus. Using an integrative approach to metadiscourse (Ädel & Mauranen 2012:2), it finds that there is a considerably higher frequency of metadiscourse in the Swedish original texts and a somewhat larger proportion of interpersonal metadiscourse, which represents the writer's attitude towards the propositional content and the readers themselves. In particular, there is a more frequent usage of boosters. In both of the translation samples, there is an increase in transition markers, which raises the level of explicitness in the text. In the translations into English, a tendency was also found for translators to reduce emphasis by omitting boosters and, in some cases, inserting hedges. This, coupled with the higher frequency of boosters in the Swedish original texts suggests that there may be differences in writing conventions in English and Swedish non-fiction texts, for instance, when it comes to increasing the emphatic force of propositions.

This study investigates how the Themes and Theme progressions in a sample of Swedish advanced lea... more This study investigates how the Themes and Theme progressions in a sample of Swedish advanced learners" writing contribute to the method of development in their texts. A comparison is made to a sample of similar writing by British university students. It was found that the advanced learners" sample contains more interactional Themes, which create a dialogic method of development similar to that found in conversational language. Themes and Theme progressions which are typical of expository writing, on the other hand, are used less frequently. These include discourse label Themes, summative progressions, which manage the build-up of information as it accumulates in the text, and split progressions, which signal hierarchical relations between parts of the informational content.

This is a pilot study comparing negation in argumentative writing in English by Swedish advanced learners, British students and professional writers in the British broadsheet press. The findings suggest that Swedish advanced learners use negation to negate interpersonal meanings (i.e. interactional and attitudinal meanings) more frequently than British students, a tendency which can be attributed to a high degree of subjective involvement generally found in Swedish advanced learners" essays. In comparison to the professional writers, both categories of student writers use negation less frequently to negate meanings on the content level of their texts. This can be attributed to the difference in the tenor relations which professional and student writers have to their readers.

It-clefts and wh-clefts (both basic and reversed) function as a rhetorical device by which author... more It-clefts and wh-clefts (both basic and reversed) function as a rhetorical device by which authors negotiate an intersubjective position for themselves in relation to heteroglossic diversity. The representation of one of the clause elements as a semantic gap in the cleft clause opens up the utterance to heteroglossic negotiation. The establishment of the identity of that clause element by the clefted constituent closes down discussion. This study compares what types Qf clause elements are represented as semantic gaps in the cleft clauses of each of these three cleft constructions in the FLOB corpus of written British English, and finds that there are distinctive patterns of intersubjective positioning for each cleft type. These reflect, among other things, the different kinds of prominence each cleft type gives to its clefted constituent.

This paper presents a pilot contrastive investigation of tense in English and Swedish. Tense is r... more This paper presents a pilot contrastive investigation of tense in English and Swedish. Tense is regarded as a morphological category, and present and past tense inflections, as well as a number of auxiliary and main verb combinations, have been compared in a small sample of texts from the English-Swedish Parallel Corpus (ESPC). A generally high degree of correspondence with some variation in the different text types was found. The most striking difference is that present tense inflections in Swedish are frequently translated into past tense inflections in English, especially in narrative texts. It was also found that Swedish tense inflections, especially present tense inflections, are frequently translated into auxiliary and main verb combinations with overtly realised modal features in English, and that English past tense inflections frequently correspond to present tense combinations with overtly realised aspectual features in the Swedish original.
