This paper reports on a study that examined the context in which Australian university teachers design in order to understand what role design support tools and strategies could play. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 academics across 16 Australian universities. The findings suggest that most Australian university teachers have a high degree of flexibility in their design decisions suggesting that opportunities exist for learning design tools and strategies to be adopted.

Yet progress towards this goal has been limited to date. Knowledge of how to integrate technology has become a necessity for university lecturers and effective models of support are needed to facilitate this often challenging process. However, little is known about how the individual lecturer designs and what methods of support might best help his or her knowledge of how to integrate ...

The collection of exemplary learning designs, development of tools and design languages have been the focus of the majority of activity to date. Research has only begun to explore how documented learning designs can be reused to support lecturers' design thinking and processes. Using a case study approach to gain understandings of these processes, the study reported in this paper followed the design, implementation and ...

Knowledge of how to integrate technology has become a necessity for university lecturers and effective models of support are needed to facilitate this often challenging process. However, little is known about how the individual lecturer designs and what methods of support might best help his or her knowledge of how to integrate technology. One reason that this area has been under-researched may be the inherent challenges in investigating design processes which by its very nature is difficult to observe. This paper describes a case study methodology designed to overcome these challenges in order to study lecturers’ use of learning designs and the development of technological, pedagogical and content knowledge while designing a unit of study.

Research has only begun to explore how documented learning designs can be reused to support lecturers’ design thinking and processes. Using a case study approach to gain understandings of these processes, the study reported in this paper followed the design, implementation and reflection phases of a unit designed with the support of a learning design. Findings indicate that the process of applying a learning design helped organize and deepen thinking about pedagogical connections within the unit; however, for an experienced technology user implementing a new unit, the learning design was reported to have minimal affect on the lecturer’s use and integration of technology.

Technology use and integration in a rapidly changing environment poses a challenge for university teachers and the current use of technology in higher education falls short of expectations. It has been suggested that the problem is due to the separation of technology from both pedagogy and content knowledge . This study investigates the use of learning designs to support the process of designing units of study and the development of knowledge around that process. Using a multiple case study approach, the study focuses on deepening understandings of technological, pedagogical and content knowledge throughout the design process and the identification of methods to support university teachers. This chapter discusses a peer evaluation process that was developed for, and trialed on, Learning Objects funded by the LEARNet project in Hong Kong. The chapter begins with a discussion of Learning Objects and the need for evaluation. It then outlines the rationale for choosing peer evaluation in the Hong Kong context, how the peer reviews were conducted, the obstacles faced, and the resulting recommendations for future evaluations.

Five academics from Hong Kong's leading teacher education university participated in the project over 18 months. The academics ranged in experience from first time users of online learning to experienced users. Five cases examine the use of online learning in a blended mode (all modules taught at the Institute are predominantly face to face teaching and learning). One of the aims of the project was to obtain perceptions of online learning from staff members from the Departments of Chinese, English, Information and Applied Technology and Physical Education and Sport Science (two staff). The five staff members were generally positive about their use of online learning. In particular, the online learning environment provided opportunities for student reflection, peer editing, students learning from each other and also provided another avenue for teacher student and student teacher feedback.

The area of Learning Design aims to provide effective, high-quality models to support university teachers in achieving this goal. Research to date on Learning Designs has focused on the development of tools, technical standards, potential needs, and attitudes towards use, with few studies investigating university teachers’ actual use of Learning Designs. Little is known, therefore, about how teachers apply Learning Designs to real design problems.
