Other libraries may be prohibited from offering one because of Institutional Review Board restrictions, as is the case at Oregon State University. We wanted to discover why libraries offer lottery incentives, what kinds of incentives, and if they believe these incentives have a positive impact on their response rates. The responding libraries hold a general belief that lottery incentives are effective, but base this on feeling rather than research. We examine what the literature says about lottery incentives and student populations.

Design/methodology/approach -The authors employed a case study approach to present the challenges of realigning an academic library. We describe the collaborative and interactive process that Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries undertook to envision what a 21 st century academy library might demand and to realign its units to support this vision. We summarize the positive outcomes of this process and provide an overview of what next steps might be. Findings -A combination of visioning exercises and collaborative study of the appropriate LIS literature was key to establishing the direction that the OSU Libraries' realignment would take and the eventual organizational structure the Libraries implemented. The realignment activities not only emphasized collaboration among unit heads, but also emphasized the importance of clear communication, ongoing assessment, and connection to the University's overall strategic goals and realignment in order to guarantee eventual success. Originality/value -This article describes a process that most academic libraries could emulate to shift the focus of legacy operations and departments to those that successfully meet the challenges of the 21 st century academic library.

Steps to prepare for serendipity are highlighted as well as a model for incorporating serendipity into a first-year writing course.

To overcome this, librarians created an assignment called the Paper Trail, where students wrote a short essay about their research process and reflected on what they would do differently. Through reviewing and grading these papers, librarians determined whether students understood the difference between the library catalog and article databases, evaluated the students' search terms to see if they used effective topic keywords and Boolean operators, and learned more on how the students reflected on their research process.

These experiences can supplement the theoretical information learned in graduate information literacy classes. Yet, the literature on structuring and creating a successful internship experience is sparse. This article reports on a survey of interns who completed an instruction internship at George Washington
