Countries around the world are creating food safety agencies in compliance with national and international food safety standards which Malawi also desperately needs. Unfortunately, current food safety system regarding fish and fish products faces mounting challenges due to outdated laws and also problems in food regulations and inspection procedures. Lack of up-to-date food quality standards also undermine Malawi’s food exports, diminishing its ability to compete in regional and international markets such as the European Union. This study will examine public health issues associated with fish marketing and consumption in Malawi.

This challenge underpins importance of forecasting using available data to support sustainable fisheries management. The study aimed at modelling and forecasting Catfish (Mlamba) species yield from artisan fishery on Lake Malawi in Mangochi District as they are becoming important food fish due to decline of more important fish species such as Oreochromis(Chambo). The study was based on secondary data on fish catches between1976 and 2012, collected from Fisheries Research Unit of the Department of Fisheries in Malawi. The study considered Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) processes to select an appropriate stochastic model for forecasting the species yield. Appropriate models were chosen based on ARIMA (p, d, q). Autocorrelation function (ACF), Partial autocorrelation (PACF), Akaike Information Criteria (AIC), Box-Ljung statistics, correlogram of residual errors, distribution of residual errors,...

Three isonitrogenous diets containing 30% crude protein with increasing dietary lipid levels (10, 15, and 20%) were provided at 5% live body weight to triplicate groups of 10 fish replicated four times for 55 days. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in growth indices (final mean weight, body weight gain (BWG) and specific growth rate (SGR)) and feed utilisation (protein efficiency ratio (PER) and apparent feed conversion efficiency (AFCE)) determined. Second order polynomial regression of BWG on lipid level (Y = -0.0043x(2) + 0.1284x + 21.499) showed 14.9% to be optimal. The most economical dietary lipid level is below 10% lipid level as indicated by the negative linear regression (Y = -0.1766x + 303.85). Of the lipid levels used, 10% appears to meet the minimum requirement for this species.
