Such documents may include costly multimedia resources, whose management raises important issues due to the constraints imposed by Web technology. This poster presents an approach for distributing shared Web documents to the authoring group's sites, taking into consideration current organization of the concerned sites, access rights granted to the co-authors and storage device capabilities.

Research paper thumbnail of Uncertainty Management in Context-Aware Applications: Increasing Usability and User Trust

The presence of uncertainty may harm the users' confidence in the application, rendering it useless. This paper describes a three-phase strategy to manage uncertainty by identifying its possible sources, representing uncertain information, and determining how to proceed, once uncertain context is detected. We conducted an experiment to assess the impact and utility of uncertainty management in a location-aware museum guide that incorporated the approach proposed. The impact was measured by comparing the number of erroneous location estimations and the number of interactions performed by users. A survey was used to measure user friendliness, the utility of the application and user trust among 118 museum visitors who participated in the experiment. Results suggest that uncertainty management helps improve the accuracy of context estimates and the user's perception on the reliability of the application.

N... more Previous research in CSCW has highlighted the importance of proximity in informal interactions. Nowadays, most current tools aimed at supporting informal interactions are focused on providing artificial proximity in traditional office environments in which workers spend most of their time "behind their desk." However, in other working environments, such as hospitals, users experience a high level of mobility that enables them to establish co-located interactions in order to collaborate and coordinate their activities with colleagues, involving the exchange and analysis of documents distributed in space or time.

Online courses however, offer limited opportunities for informal interactions, which might put them at a disadvantage when compared to traditional courses. To evaluate possible technological solutions to this problem, we conducted a study of a computational system, designed to support informal interactions named CENTERS. The participants were 43 students from two different Mexican universities in four online courses, three undergraduate and one graduate. The data consisted of responses from two questionnaires, one applied at the beginning of the course and one at the end, and transcripts from all the courses. We tried to determine if the system increased the interaction among course participants, their satisfaction with the course, and if it helped reduce their feelings of isolation. Using multivariate statistical methods, including principal component analysis to detect possible associations among the variables, cluster analysis to measure the distances of similarity among the groups detected in the PCA and factor analysis to view the groupings of the parameters in their spatial arrangement, responses from our questionnaires were analyzed for associations among the variables considered in the study. Results suggest that CENTERS helps students reduce their feeling of isolation and increases collaboration among course participants. Additionally students who interacted more reported greater satisfied with the course in general, although this was not necessarily due to the use of the system. #

Research paper thumbnail of Providing Awareness of Elder's Situations of Care through a Context-Aware Notification Environment: A Preliminary Evaluation

Given their condition, elders could be involved in situations that may affect their physical integrity or quality of life, and caregivers may be unaware of the situation or not be able to attend it on time. This paper proposes a context-aware notification environment to support the work of caregivers. The aim is to increase the caregiver's awareness about the situations of care of older people in a nursing home, so that caregivers could act appropriately and timely to attend those situations. Firstly, we present the results of a study to understand the situations of care that occur at a nursing home. Later, we propose the design of a context-aware notification environment whose design was informed by this understanding. One of the main features of this environment is that it takes into consideration the contextual information both from the caregiver and from the elder in order to adapt the notification. Preliminary results of the evaluation of an implementation with an audio notification mechanism are promising. During the evaluation period caregivers perceived an increase in their awareness of the situations of care and a safer working environment regarding the provided quality of care.

The former applies to the space where collaborative activities are performed, while the second relates to the initial space where opportunities for collaboration are identified and an initial interaction is established. We present a characterization for Potential Collaboration Spaces featuring awareness elements for the potential of collaboration and mechanisms to gather and present them, as well as mechanisms to establish an initial interaction and associated GUI elements. We argue that by making this distinction explicit, and characterizing Potential Collaboration Spaces, designers of groupware can better identify the technical requirements of their systems and thus provide solutions that more appropriately address their users concerns. We illustrate this concept with the design of an application that supports Potential Collaboration Spaces for the PIÑAS web-based coauthoring middleware.
