In this article, we suggest that cognitive biases are a major restraining force that has been ignored in diversity management research. Drawing upon the theory of rationality/intuition two-system thinking, we explain that the driving forces for workforce diversity are primarily propelled by rational reasoning. Yet, their effects are impeded by the cognitive roadblocks rooted in intuitive thinking. We propose a behavioral design approach to reduce the restraining forces by mitigating perceptual biases and judgment errors in the work context.

It includes a wide range of negative acts conducted by employees to harm the organization and its members. Research indicates that organizational justice is a dominant predictor of workplace deviant behavior. Specifically, the justice perspective proposes that workplace deviance is a reaction to the unfairness perceived by employees in their organizational life. A rich body of research has investigated the relationship between employees' fairness perceptions and various forms of workplace deviance behaviors. Yet, to date, a comprehensive review of the literature is unavailable that summarizes and integrates this stream of research. In this paper, I seek to fill this gap. First, I review the current state of research as to the relationship between justice and deviance by presenting the various theoretical frameworks, as well as empirical findings. Next, I summarize existing research patterns and identify research challenges that must be overcome in order to advance our understanding of this topic. Finally, I offer future directions researchers should undertake in justice-deviance research. Specifically, I suggest the development of more comprehensive models that include potential moderators and mediators that may better explain how and why justice judgments can lead to deviant behaviors and when the negative effect is most damaging. The purpose of this article is to review and integrate the research on the relationship between organizational justice and workplace deviant behaviors in the current literature. In conducting this review, I searched academic online databases PsychINFO and ABI/INFORM. Considering that workplace deviance is a relatively new domain in management studies, and that a comprehensive review on the relationship between organizational justice and deviance has yet to be published, I did not specify any limit on the time period in the searches. I also reviewed major journals in the field, including

Research paper thumbnail of Interfirm Cultural Compatibility and Communication in Supply Chain and Operations Performance

Drawing from the STS rationale, we suggest that interfirm cultural compatibility can facilitate interfirm communication, which contributes to supply chain and operations performance. We use structural equation modeling method to analyze data from 687 manufacturing facilities and find that interfirm communication mediates the relationship between interfirm cultural compatibility and partner performance. Out of the four customer performance outcomes tested, the effect of cultural compatibility on three outcomes (order delivery, lead time, and sales forecast error in two years) are mediated through interfirm communication. Cultural compatibility impacts sales forecast error in two months directly. Our findings shed light on the processes whereby interfirm cultural...

This study proposes and investigates a three-layer capability hierarchy for developing MCC. Within this hierarchy technical and cognitive capabilities are high-level capability foundations that enable an innovation capability which, in turn, facilitates the development of MCC. We employ structural equation modeling to test our theory using a global data set. We further cross-validate our findings with multiple triangulation procedures including qualitative interviews. Results from this study challenge the prevailing toolkit-based paradigm in explaining MCC development and establish a new capability hierarchy paradigm for MCC development. This study contributes to mass customization (MC) literature in several ways. First, it shifts the current MC research focus to an internal, capability-driven ...

Using data from manufacturers around the world, we develop an index of ambiculturality to show how it emerges from paradoxical cultural forces. We then test and find support for our hypotheses. The results suggest that when firms are able to balance multiple cultural contrasts, they are able to use the best of various perspectives, discover and exploit innovation opportunities, and compete successfully in the marketplace.

Social media, as a powerful platform for information dissemination and communication, revolutionized the way people communicate with each other. A growing body of literature has capitalized on this trend with numerous studies devoted to understanding the internet phenomenon. Yet, there is a paucity of empirical research investigating both types of media simultaneously regarding their influence on individual values and attitudes. This study fills this gap by juxtaposing the social media (new media) and television media (traditional media) to investigate their respective cultivation effect on materialism, religiosity, and to predict perceived standard of living and life satisfaction. Our focal research question is: do social media and television media differ in their influence on values and subjective well-being, and if so, how?

Structural equation modeling analyses show that technological capability and behavioral norms of intrinsic motivation and decision control all have strong main effects on relational performance. Multigroup analyses further demonstrate that behavioral norms interact with technological capability very differently across cultural clusters. Our findings highlight the importance of behavioral aspects in operational effectiveness; as well as the importance of understanding the influence of national culture on management theories and practices in achieving global operational effectiveness.
