Both theoretically and empirically, the process of commercialization has received scant attention. This study investigates the early commercialization process of three innovative firms in the Norwegian petroleum industry. The authors argue that the role of strategic choice is important for the processes these firms use to create and build their own dynamic capabilities. In this regard, they address the central question of what role the strategic choice of the firm plays in the process, creation and evolution of its dynamic capabilities during the early stage of commercialization. The authors' findings reveal that certain dynamic capabilities are emphasized and appear to be more relevant to the strategic intentions of the CEO or entrepreneurial team. Two firms, whose strategic intent was to commercialize and exit, were more inclined to build an adaptive capability, while the firm intending to commercialize and to stay in the market stressed the importance of absorptive capability. Common to all three cases is the finding that adaptive and absorptive capabilities seem to enhance their innovative capabilities, which are essential for commercializing innovations.

However, the growth has outpaced the research and understanding of which factors influence the performance and development of individual firms. Our results reveal that social capital influences entrepreneurial perceptions of legitimacy competence and financial competence success. In an indirect but important manner, social capital affects financial performance via perceptions of legitimacy. Moreover, entrepreneurs' intensity towards the business is associated with their perception of financial competence and firm performance. Results further show that perceived legitimacy plays a key role in signalling to others the credibility of the firm. The paper discusses implications for women in emerging and transitioning economies as more women seek out and leverage their own networks towards their own sustainability.

In specific, we need a better, richer understanding of how personal influences are related to a nascent entrepreneur’s development of his/her own perceptions of capabilities to launch a new venture. Our results revealed that women have a higher mean entrepreneurial capability, and higher mean personal and social influences. We also find that personal and social influences are positively related to entrepreneurial capability; the strength of relationship does not vary significantly by gender. Finally, we find that personal influence has a U-shaped relationship with entrepreneurial capability, especially for women, but not differently for men also. Only at low and high levels, personal influence has an accelerated positive influence on e...

Utilizing a large sample of women-led family businesses, the study investigates the relationships between risk-taking propensity, entrepreneurial intensity, and opportunity recognition of the entrepreneur and the innovative orientation of the firm and sustainability. A model of the influences on innovativeness and sustainability in family firms is developed, and the potential contribution of the present study is the identification of constructs that facilitate these strategic outcomes and behaviors that drive growth. The degree to which family firms can create new products, services, and processes that add value to their marketplace can strongly influence their sustainability, especially in an emerging economy.

Whether these problems are found in the education, healthcare, housing, energy, or other sectors, it is the social entrepreneur who rises to the challenge and uses his/her ability to recognize, motivate, and mobilize others to collectively take action. Moreover, because the social entrepreneur often operates in resource-scarce environments, he/she is compelled to use creative approaches to attract nontraditional resources and to apply those resources in novel ways to the challenges faces. Finally, it is often the social entrepreneur who encourages a heightened sense of accountability in the individuals and communities he/she serves, as well as instigating the outcomes and impact that are created.

Similar gender effects on entrepreneurial self-efficacy are shown for both groups and support earlier research on the relationship between self-efficacy and career intentions. Additionally, the effects of entrepreneurship education in MBA programs on entrepreneurial self-efficacy proved stronger for women than for men. Implications for educators and policy makers were discussed, and areas for future research outlined.
