I will suggest these heads impart an ability to coherently develop argumentation. However, an equal, if not more profound result of mastering these skills, is an ability to create beauty or delight for an audience. Aphthonius’ use of what Aristotle calls Recognition will be considered in light of the four narrative heads of Cause, Converse, Analogy, and Example. Historical and contemporary examples of student writing will be used to illustrate a relationship between these ancient exercises and the creative expression of beauty. I will finally suggest that the ability and desire to provide an audience with beauty leads a writer to experience language as participatory rather than coercive.

This treatment will then suggest how mastery of this progymnasmata stage in a 10th grade classroom prepares contemporary students to master the Canon of Style as presented in Hermogenes in the 11th and 12th grade. The first five components of Hermogenes Style rubric—Thought, Method, Diction, Figures, and Clauses—will be used to analyze the models provided in Aphthonius for areas of convergence and/or divergence. Examples of current student exercises and compositions will be used to evaluate the efficacy these ancient methods of instruction in contemporary secondary writing instruction.

An applicable pedagogy for use in teaching the invention of enthymemes will be suggested. The paper will first consider Aphthonius’ use of enthymemes in his two models and then suggest an effective method for inventing enthymemes with the use of the five indemonstrables of Stoic logic.
