Research paper thumbnail of Evolution of surface plasmon resonance for silver particle film on mesoporous Si02 and soda-lime glass during heating in air and H2

The evolution of surface plasmon resonance absorption of the as-prepared samples was investigated when alternately heated in air and H2. It has been shown that the evolution behaviours were very different with Ag film thickness and substrates. The results were explained in terms of subtle difference of the two SiO2-based substrates in micro-structure or chemical composition, the redox of silver and relative Ag content.

Its material properties were tested by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and Instron, and simulated using fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD). The glass transition temperature (T (g)) of SMPU60 determined by DMA is 316 K, which is slightly lower than that estimated through MD simulations (T (g) = 328 K) , showing the calculated T ( g ) is in good agreement with experimental data. A complex hydrogen bonding network was revealed with the calculation of radial distribution functions (RDFs). The C═O⋯H bond is the predominant hydrogen-bonding interaction. With increasing temperature, both the hydrogen bonding and the moduli decreased, and the dissociation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding induced the decrease of the moduli.

The relations between the structure and shape memory effect of these two series were studied with respect to the ionic group content and the effect of neutralization. The resulting data indicate that, with the introduction of asymmetrical extender, the stress at 100% elongation is decreased for PU non-ionomer and ionomer series, especially lowered sharply for non-ionomer series; the fixation ratio of ionomer series is not affected obviously by the ionic group content; the total recovery ratio of ionomer series is decreased greatly. After sufficient relaxation time for samples stretched beforehand, the switching temperature is raised slightly, whereas the recovery ratio measured with strain recovery test method is lowered with increased DMPA content. The characterization with FT-IR, DSC, DMA elucidated that, the ordered hard domain of the two series is disrupted with the introduction of DMPA which causes more hard segments to dissolve in soft phase; ionic groups on hard segment enhance the cohesion between hard segments especially at high ionic group content and significantly facilitate the phase separation compared with the corresponding non-ionomer at moderate ionic group content.

ABSTRACT The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) optical absorption of Ag nanoparticles loaded in mes... more ABSTRACT The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) optical absorption of Ag nanoparticles loaded in mesoporous SiO2 (with fairly low Ag content, about 0.14 wt %) have been investigated after the nanoparticles were heated in or exposed to various atmospheres (i.e., air, H2, water vapor, Ar, and H2S). Unexpectedly, the SPR optical absorption can completely disappear in quite a short time or intensively emerge or drastically change into semiconductor optical absorption edge. Surprisingly, the SPR switches are well reversible and very rapid when alternating treatment of samples in any two atmospheres mentioned above. In addition, those novel and distinctive SPR changes reflect a series of abnormal chemical redox behaviors in various atmospheres. The mechanisms have been discussed based on modeling multi-interactions between the mesoporous SiO2 matrix, Ag nanoparticles, and atmospheres, revealing a special surface/interface synergetic effect that induces many novel phenomena despite SiO2 usually being regarded as a chemical inert medium to noble metals and environmental atmospheres. Our new findings for such a simple Ag/SiO2 system, smart, reversible, and rapid SPR responses to various atmospheres, are highly valuable for SPR gas sensor, optical switch, and other SPR optics and give a new understanding of the catalysis and surface/interface chemistry in the Ag/SiO2 system.

In this study, a series of pyridine-containing shape memory polyurethanes (Py-SMPUs) with different pyridine contents were synthesized. Based on the theoretical analysis, the structure and morphology of Py-SMPUs were studied systematically with FT-IR, DSC, WAXD, DMA, AFM, etc. Results show that a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular structure is formed in the Py-SMPUs. Hydrogen bonds present in the urethane group and pyridine ring are the most favorable hydrogen bonds which play an important role in the movement of the polymer chain. Microphase separation consisting of a soft phase and hard phase occurs in the Py-SMPUs. The soft phase is influenced greatly by the N, N-bis(2-hydroxyl ethyl) isonicotinamide (BINA) unit and the hard phase is mainly a result of the hexamethylene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol (HDI-BDO) units. As the BINA content decreases, the soft phase tends to change gradually from a continuous amorphous phase to a droplet-like dispersion phase, whereas the hard phase develops from a droplet-like dispersion amorphous phase to a continuous crystalline phase.
