Most maternal deaths are preventable if mothers receive essential health care before, during, and after childbirth. In India, the eight socioeconomically backward states referred to as the Empowered Action Group (EAG) states; lag behind in the demographic transition and low utilization of maternal health care services. Addressing the maternity care needs of women may have considerable ramifications for achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG – 5).Aims & Objectives: To explore the prevalence, trends and factors associated with the utilization of maternal care services in Empowered Action Group States, India (1990-2006).Material Methods: Data from three rounds of the round of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), known as the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) of India were analyzed. Bivariate and multivariate-pooled logistic ...

Research paper thumbnail of Nano pyrite (FeS2) root priming enhances chilli and marigold production in nutrients-deficient soil: A nano strategy for fertiliser tuning

Plants with superior root system architecture perform better in such soils by virtue of their superior mineral assimilation potential. Earlier we showed that seed pre-treatment with nano-pyrite (FeS 2 /Py) results in improved root architecture in chickpea, Sesamum, carrot and beetroot. Here we have developed a root-priming strategy for crops requiring transplantation. As a case study, roots of 28-days-old chilli and marigold seedlings were primed for 3 h in an aqueous suspension of nano-pyrite (@100 µg/ ml), prior to transplantation, resulting in significant increase in the fruit and flower yield respectively. Chilli yields for control (without nitrogen, phosphorous, potash (NPK) or root priming), with NPK application only, with nano-pyrite root-priming only, and with nano-pyrite root-priming along with NPK application were found out to be 1327.

However, the continuous use of excess fertilizers is polluting the water resources and damaging the fragile ecosystem. The key question is 'how farmers could use lesser fertilizers without reducing crop yields?' This is a challenge for the sustainable agriculture. Here we showed, in rice crop, seed dressing with nano-pyrite (FeS 2), without any addition of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potash) fertilizer, resulted in a comparable yield as obtained following standard fertilizer application. The total grain yields from control (no fertilizer application), standard NPK fertilizer application, 'FeS 2 seed pre-treatment only' without any application of NPK, NPK + FeS 2 treatment were recorded as 1.32 ± 0.0, 1.61 ± 0.1, 1.63 ± 0.1 and 1.68 ± 0.1 [mean (in kg) ± SD], respectively. Interestingly, simultaneous application of FeS 2 seed pre-treatment plus fertilizer did not show any significant additive effect. Thus, nano-pyrite seed pre-treatment opens up an 'NPK equivalent' strategy for rice production, which could setup a new sustainable paradigm for rice growers.

Research paper thumbnail of Development of Controlled Release Formulations of Ketoprofen for Oral Use

Drug Development and Industrial Pharmacy, 1995

Suspensions of cellulose acetate phthalate were prepared and various quantities of drug, glycerin, tween 80, span 80, methocel and avicel were added and the resulting solution was passed through a peristaltic pump into a hardening solution. Beads were formed, dried and the release of the drug was studied at various time intervals in a dissolution medium of simulated intestinal pH. The dissolution studies of the ketoprofen demonstrated differences in drug release properties depending on composition and method of preparation. A formulation of Methocel beads with equal proportions of the two surfactants released its drug content over a period of 12 hours in a zero-order fashion. Rapid drug dissolution was seen when the formulations contained Tween 80 as a surfactant. Varying the ...

Research paper thumbnail of A comparative study of different discretizations for solving bivariate aggregation population balance equation

Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2014

Numerical results obtained using the most commonly used cell average and fixed pivot techniques on four different types of structured grids are compared with the exact solutions. As expected, the cell average technique predicts more accurate solution than the fixed pivot technique for all different grids. Moreover, the results predicted using the cell average technique using X-type grid with logarithmic scale in the radial direction provide solutions of high quality among all other grids.

Research paper thumbnail of The glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucose-stimulated insulin response to exercise training and diet in obesity

American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2009

Exercise and diet are known to improve glucose metabolism and the pancreatic insulin response to glucose, and this effect may be mediated through the incretin effect of GIP. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a 12-wk exercise training intervention (5 days/wk, 60 min/day, 75% V̇o2 max) combined with a eucaloric (EX, n = 10) or hypocaloric (EX-HYPO, pre: 1,945 ± 190, post: 1,269 ± 70, kcal/day; n = 9) diet on the GIP response to glucose in older (66.8 ± 1.5 yr), obese (34.4 ± 1.7 kg/m2) adults with impaired glucose tolerance. In addition to GIP, plasma PYY3–36, insulin, and glucose responses were measured during a 3-h, 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Both interventions led to a significant improvement in V̇o2 max ( P < 0.05). Weight loss (kg) was significant in both groups but was greater after EX-HYPO (−8.3 ± 1.1...
