In addition, X-ray PES binding energies for the monomeric a,P,y,&tetraphenylporphinatoiron cation with selected anions (C104-, Br-, CI-, and N3-) are found to be correlated with the half-wave potentials for reduction in the noncoordinating solvent dichloromethane. Comparisons are made between the previously reported infrared, Mossbauer, X-ray crystallographic, magnetic susceptibility, and electrochemical results and the X-ray PES data in an attempt to unambiguously assign the electron environment of the p-nitrido complex. In contrast to the p-oxo dimer and the monomers, the electronic configuration about each five-coordinate Fe atom in the p-nitrido dimer has been shown to be low spin.

In order to produce low permeability films, it is necessary to minimize the carbon content. Films were deposited by a room temperature PECVD process in a parallel plate reactor, and were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, microbalance, and elastic recoil detection (ERD). The infrared-active carbon groups appear in Si–CH3, CHx, C=O, and SiC bands. A double band at 2343 cm−1 has also been seen to track these bands. Deposition rate data shows linear behavior as a function of the Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) concentration in the reactor. The carbon within the films ranges from 36% to <1% of the amount of carbon assisted with HMDSO required to grow the films, depending upon the oxygen flow rate. By comparing the ERD composition data to the infrared spectral data, a carbon content correlation value has been found, and a detailed study of the data reveals evidence of C–C bond existence within films having the greatest total carbon content. Finally, it appears that the 2343 cm−1 band corresponds to CO2 rotational bands, in which the distribution of rotational states is evidence of hindered molecular motion.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging accounted for 44.7% of single-serve beverage packaging in the US in 2021, and 12% of global solid waste. A strategic solution is needed to manage plastic packaging solid waste. Major beverage manufacturers have pledged to reduce their environmental footprint by taking steps towards a sustainable future. The PET bottle has several properties that make it an environmentally friendly choice. The PET bottle has good barrier properties as its single-layer, mono-material composition allows it to be more easily recycled. Compared to glass, the PET bottle is lightweight and has a lower carbon footprint in production and transportation. With modern advancements to decontamination processes in the recycling of post-consumer recycled PET (rPET or PCR), it has become a safe material for reuse as beverage packaging. It has...

ABSTRACT A technique is described for measuring humidity with high sensitivity and wide dynamic r... more ABSTRACT A technique is described for measuring humidity with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range using surface acoustic waves. A delay-line-stabilized SAW oscillator is used, the delay line being coated with a thin film of a suitable hygroscopic material. Sorption of moisture produces rapid changes in the electrical and mechanical properties of the film. This results in a change in the velocity of the surface acoustic wave and hence in the frequency of the SAW oscillator. With polyimide used as the hygroscopic material, the frequency of a 75-MHz oscillator fabricated on a 128 degree Y-X LiNbO//3 substrate is found to vary by more than 150 kHz as the relative humidity is varied from near 0% RH to 100% RH. The calculated detection limit (assuming oscillator short-term stability of 1 part in 10**7 ) is less than 1. 5 ppm//v of humidity, or a corresponding dew point of -72 degree C. Simultaneous humidity and temperature sensing has been demonstrated using a dual-delay-line approach.

Using industry-standard software based on permeation/diffusion fundamentals, we analyze and predict whole-package ingress/egress as well as permeant interactions and quantities in sidewall and product. Selected examples will be given in PET or engineered-barrier containers of:
• SLLF determination by means of rapid prediction of oxidation and vitamin-destruction limit tests;
• filled-package (surrogate or product) long-term dO2 test-curve predictions and interpretation for oxygen-scavenger containers;
• dry-product isotherm development for clumping/crispness prediction in foods and food supplements;
• stability-test matrix reduction using Aw-based predictions of simulant (OTC surrogate) retention; and
• layer-placement considerations and attendant barrier-property loss in hygroscopic barrier polymers (via Tg simulation).
Complexity-levels of container simulation, and confirmation of empirically verifiable (testable) parameters will be discussed. At least one 'failure to launch' scenario (based on polymer-blend delamination) will be cited.
